“What a fantastic place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2012

This was my first experience of 'glamping'! I must say, I do not often use trip advisor, but I did want to tell everyone what an amazing place this is! We stayed in the bunkhouse, which had en-suite toilets and shower, and was very clean, and also had use of the communal lounge and kitchen area, which had all the basic essentials and more! The wood burning stoves kept the rooms very cozy and inviting, especially after you have been outside!

The most amazing part of this place is the traditional Finnish outdoor hot tub and sauna, which made a fantastic experience overall. The owners were also absolutely lovely!

We did take a walk around to explore the Yurt and roundhouse, which were both very spacious and traditional. We will definitely be back!

I've just spent my birthday weekend with 14 friends in the roundhouse at Marthrown and, despite never having written a review onTrip Advisor before, I felt compelled to tell other people how amazing this place is! We had an absolutely fantastic time. We made good use of the hot tub and sauna at night, and the beautiful walks and bike trails during the day. Mike and family were very welcoming and we felt like he was on hand to help us out with anything we needed all weekend. The place is absolutely perfect for a group weekend away and we all spent less on the whole weekend than we would do in a normal weekend back home! Thanks a million Mike and Pam, we'll meet again!

This a brilliant location for mountain biking and generally relaxing, but we expected more from the price and from the picture painted by the website. Our bunkbarn was reasonably equipped with 8 beds, 2 showers, one private loo and another next door. It also had it's own lounge area and a nice veranda with wood burning stove. Sounds great, but everything was dirty, the toilet walls ran with condensation so that the floor was wet through, the veranda was overgrown and not remotely condusive to sitting on and there was a dirty pair of pants hanging in the shower room! The showers were at least hot, but nowhere to hang clothing, towels etc within reach of showers.
We were also disappointed with the kitchen facilities which were dirty and messy when we arrived (probably due to large group in rather than owners). Bins/recycling facilities inadequate and nowhere to leave bags of food except work surfaces. Website states that a second kitchen has been provided so that self-caterers have space when owner is catering, but it seemed that all the utensils, pots, pans, plates etc were in the catering kitchen and we kept having to go and retrieve things from the other kitchen! As there was a large group being catered for at the table, we had to eat off our knees on the sofa. Another pair were on folding chairs in the kitchen eating off their knees. Seems a bit unfair that campers can get preferential use of the facilities like this when we were paying premium rates for the bunkbarns.
We took all our own food, as we are used to doing in bunkbarns, though there were many things provided. Perhaps the price reflects the fact that there is tea/coffee/cereal etc, but I wouldn't want to rely on them-some of the jams etc available were full of mould.
Hot tub is a nice addition, the woodland camping does look nice, but we would not stay here again at the prices charged. £12-£14 seems more appropriate or we would pay an extra £5 pppn and stay in a b&b with clean facilites, private rooms and breakfast included!

Many thanks to Mike and Pam for accommodating us (West Drayton Mountain Bike Club) in Upper and Lower Nith Bunkhouses. We had such a great time and loved the set up you have there (especially the Hot Tub/Sauna and covered BBQ) which we all made good use of. Everything is very much thought out and well equipped for our group of 12 ! would recommend it to fellow cyclists and others that enjoy the natural style of get away in the forests of Mabie!

We stayed here during a rainy weekend in August, and have got to say it was brilliant, despite the rain ! Myself, partner, sister her partner, decided to camp in the forest.
Mike showed us around and explained everything from the composting toilets, to the outdoor showers and the hot tub and sauna.
The campsite was excellent, lots to do including an obstacle course, wood burning hot tub and sauna, a bbq area. There was a nice area where you could just chill outside and a kitchen to use to make brews or for a fiver a night you could cook there.
We had a cooked breaky from Pam both mornings and it was delicious. We seen lots of wildlife including deer and went on some really nice walks.
We loved this campsite, it was really laid back and we liked the fact there was an area where we could make a bit noise seeing as there were kids camping right next to our tent.
Hilights were defiantly the hot tub ! Even though it was raining it was fab to be outside in the rain, drinking wine and chilling out in it !
We can't wait to return and try the yurts !

I stayed here with a group of friends in the bunkhouse and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The owners are friendly and leave you to get on with enjoying your stay. The whole place has a secluded feel, despite being close to Dumfries.

The hosts are very friendly, My family and I stayed in the tipi, which was fun , next to the roundhouse, we were a bit cold through the night. We had a wood burning fire, but didnt use it.
I liked the tipi itself, the bbq, the fire area, the playground, the mud, and the people and home made from the forest table and chairs. I didnt go to the hot tub so I dont know what it was like but would probably like it.I would improve some lights in the tipi, a shelter above the bbq. in case it rains, and a hot tub closer to the roundhouse. Molly ( aged 10 ).

The compostable toilets were novel and not bad at all ( get Mike to explain about the chemistry behind it, very interesting ). My sister loved the outdoor shower, she said it was very hot and good to look through the forest whilst taking a shower !
We had a great bbq and a camp fire, it was great to get back to nature for a couple of nights, no computer, TV, gadgets etc. just good old camping in the forest, fun.
This place is fantastic for a family to get away from it all . Great if you like hill walking, mountain biking etc.
Once you turn off the main road onto the forest track, thats it, you are part of the forest life.
We enjoyed our stay very much and would ( and have done ) recommend this place.
Thank you to Mike and Pam for making us very welcome. *****
