Having visited Gatehouse of fleet for over 25yrs, food awful and overpriced. Take a visit to the Masonic Arms instead, they know how to cater. Even the room we ate in was tired and in need of an update, looked like a community hall! This meal was supposed to be a birthday treat for my wife, ruined! Wont visit here again anytime soon. Service staff were pleasant though.

Went with the kids a few months back - haven't been up to this neck of the woods for awhile and it was great to see the place again. Really friendly atmosphere and fantastic steak, will be coming back again.

We visited the Murray Arms twice while staying in Gatehouse of Fleet and all had excellent food each time. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough to help. The seating areas inside and out are a bit basic but as this was not at the top of our priorities we would definitely visit again.

Started with mussels which were overcooked. This I followed with a sirloin steak ordered medium rare, arrived well done. The staff asked how it was and very kindly changed it. The next one arrived between blue and rare so complained again. Another one arrived in the same state as the first one somewhere between medium and well done. At this stage I gave up and ate it. It had also changed from a 10oz sirloin to a strip of shoe leather. The staff were lovely and the bottle of wine was good value but I will not be returning, which is a shame, as I have been coming here for 43 years. This really is the worst meal yet, standards have been dropping for years.

Over twenty-odd years of visiting Gatehouse, the Murray Arms has featured as one of our must-go places to eat. On arrival on a Saturday night it was always a pleasure to sit in the Lunky Hole and enjoy a heart 8oz filet steak.

However over recent years the catering here has declined and tonight to an all time low. My partner's mussels were overcooked, the haggis starter was no more than three small mouthfuls. But crime of the night was the 'chef's' total incompetence at being able to cook two steaks properly. We asked for two sirloins medium-rate - the first were tougher than boot leather, the second were raw, but at the third attempt we were proffered two more steaks with reheated accompaniments - but the steaks were now half the size, thinner and still not cooked as we had asked and were over done.

We cannot fault the staff, one of whom appeared to have returned to the Arms after a break and seemed highly embarrassed at the quality of the meal we had been served.

Bill-wise, one of the steaks was removed, so we paid - but I doubt we'll ever go back.

After twenty years of custom I feel quite sad at how this place has gone downhill.
