“Good stopover hotel or base for local touring”

Hotel has well appointed rooms although the public areas are a little "tired" and could do with a re-fresh. Ambience in bar area not as cosy or inviting as it could be. Staff were quite friendly and helpful and the food (in the bar) was ok, well cooked and quite tasty, not a hugely inspiring menu in either bar or restaurant.
Room was a good size but if you're looking for an invigorating shower and a large towel to wrap yourself in you wont get it!!

Room Tip: Not sure where would be any better but we were in 210 and 211 and the noise from the motorway was lo...

poor service dirty smelly rooms in desperate need of refurbishment bar staff ignorant and unhelpful reception the same the first room we were given had the wallpaper ripped off the walls the net curtains were covered in black mould and the bathroom was old fashioned and poor quality
worse still the fire alarms went off at 2.30 in the morning we had to wait outside in the pouring rain for the fire service to arrive in our nightwear after about an hour we were allowed to wait back in the hotel bar we were not even offered a hot drink although everyone was wet and cold .i thought this to be very poor service as a lot of the other guests were elderly. i will never visit again

Check in was efficient & cheerful, from then on it went down hill. Room was tiny & very warm. had to swing on the window to get it open an inch. Television was broken although they did come & fix it straight away.
Bar staff were miserable & rude. asked for a white wine & soda got a large glass of wine with dash of soda, no ice. when I pointed out this was not what I asked for the Bar man glared & slung the contents of the glass in the sink. I said all he had to do was put it in a tall glass he said there were no tall glasses.

Food was poor, catering mainly for large coach parties who leave the next day. Bottled water was never served cold even in the meeting rooms.

Staff didn't listen to our requests. When we asked for a certain wine we said if there was a problem could they let us know & we would choose an alternative. They just substituted different wines which were not to our liking. When we asked for the wine list it was like we had asked for the moon. The waiting staff never smiled & made us feel our requests were beyond what they were expected to do.

We found it quicker to go to the bar ourselves as we were left waiting to be asked if we would like a drink for 20 mins.

When we asked for more milk for the meeting room as we had run out it took another 20 mins by which time our coffee break was over. we asked for jugs of water & only 1 was brought for 20 people.

There were some very good people working there but the majority, mainly the staff in the bar & restaurant, spoiled the experience.

Judy the singer on Tuesday & Wednesday was fantastic fun as was Kenny the night porter.

Had a stopover on the way back from Scotland. As other reviewers have said it is a little dated bit very good value and excellent breakfast.
The beds are very soft which I quite liked. The room itself was on the small side with a large bathroom. Could do with nicer towels, a little small and thin. All in all I would use the hotel again for a stopover. Good value for what we paid.

My wife and I have been spending short holidays at The Gretna Hall for almost 20 years apart from the past 3 to 4 years when we purchased a caravan and spent every week-end there. We have now sold our caravan and have returned to taking short breaks and are happy we have now returned to the Hall.

The Hotel is situated in lovely grounds, it has extremely friendly and helpful staff, the rooms are bright and clean and the food is excellent.

We find the breaks very good value for money and have already booked for 'Twixmas' but will be spending another two to thre breaks at the hotel between then and now.

Room Tip: If possible avoid rooms at the back as they look out onto the Motorway and even with double glazing...

Stay here a least once a year travelling between Lincolnshire and Fort William. The value is fantastic. Try to get a front room, traffic noise at the back. Hoel can be busy with weddings - great people watching! And often adds to the pleasure of the stay. Always find the service both friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: Try to get a front room

Stayed here for just two nights for a family wedding.A small group but we did not have a bar in the wedding room - there was one member of staff at the bar who was frequently drawn away to other duties. The wedding venue itself, the "old blacksmiths" is quite charming (although there seems to be an older blacksmiths just a few hundred yards away - make your own minds up which is the more authentic). The food was pub grub standard at best although the food and drink prices were fair - if you could get a drink. But for a place that boasts it's expertise in weddings this is less than satisfactory. Our room was pretty average but I had the opportunity to inspect other rooms which were very poor.Torn upholstery and wallpaper, shabby fixtures and fittings, cobwebs in addition to enormous wear and tear in some communal areas, but just generally in need of updating. They must surely be making enough money because of the continual production line of weddings and functions. Most of the rooms seem to be in an annexe which looks like an army barracks - concrete and very plain.A bit of a shame when the main building is obviously very old.To summarise - must try harder.

Room Tip: Not sure - even some of the bridal suites were dissapointing
