“A wedding not a business hotel”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

Gretna Green is without doubt the wedding mecca destination it's famous for make no mistake. Why people want to get married beside one of the noisiest and busiest motorways I've ever seen I don't know. More importantly Smiths is predominantly a wedding hotel not a business one. If you do use it for business beware because it can be a very mixed bag. I've stayed there now a few times for work and it can be virtually taken over by emotional wedding parties full of brimming party spirit, over tired children running amok (who can keep you awake) and acres of white meringue dresses. When this happens the business traveller pales into insignificance. When the hotel is busy the wi fi collapses totally, a frustrating nightmare for working in the evening and the restaurant will simply say they are full, eat in the bar or not at all. The bedrooms vary enormously. Don't stay in a room at the back of the hotel or you will be so close to the motorway you can see the number plates. Insist on the front or better still the very comfortable and quiet newly built cottages across the road, thought they are extremely pricey indeed. The rooms at the front of the hotel with balconies are the best. The good news is the beds are comfortable and the towels very fluffy but the restaurant menu tries far too hard and is too fussy but is no doubt called for for weddings. The service is poor (we used the private dining room for a business dinner and had to pour our own wine and wait ages for plates to be cleared). Breakfast offers a good choice though not serving 'real' orange juice in my book is a complete crime, as it not giving away bottles of water in rooms.
All in all it could be improved easily with some attention to detail and better customer service for the business traveller or else perhaps it should just completely concentrate on the wedding trade instead.

Room Tip: Don't stay at the back of the hotel as it is very close to the motorway, insist on a room at the...

Thank you stargazey, this is a very sensible review and i enjoyed reading it, certainly from the perspective of the business traveller. I note your extensive reviews on this site, again with fair balance of praise and critique, just what this forum is for. In response, yes of course weddings are a big factor of the hotel, we are in Gretna Green after all and there is, certainly at the weekends and during the summer (upto end Sept) a high volume of wedding business. Obviously not all days are the same and wedding guests vary, both in size and behaviour. Clearly when you stayed the group was of the lively sort, which we do strive to appropriately control. In terms of business travellers however, they do make up at least a third of my business, mainly midweek as you'd expect and the feedback is in the majority extremely positive and always a welcome from the repetitive and predictable "chain" environments most are used to with the free WIFI (usually strong signal) and free carparking very welcome. Do pop your head into my office (next to reception) next time youre here, id be delighted to continue a conversation face to face. Best regards Darren

We stayed for 2 nights and also attended a Wedding Reception in this lovely Hotel. Its in a convenient location with plenty of car parking space. Staff were welcoming, friendly and efficient. The room was a good size very clean and well furnished. Reception was held downstairs in a lovely room, food was very good especially the steak. Would definately stay again if in the area

Stayed here to celebrate my partners birthday. Stayed in room number 15. Room was modern and clean but was situated above the kitchen which meant some noise. Food from both menus were second to none and staff were very polite and attentive. Hotel was in a good situation for the Gretna outlet village where there were many bargains to be had .

We booked our room at Smiths over 18 months ago as part of the "Stay and Marry" package. We chose to upgrade our room to a balcony room and also added the Personal Arrival Package, it was for a special occasion after all!. We arrived late afternoon and were shown through to the bar for our arrival cocktails before going up to our room. That evening we chose to eat from the bar menu which had a good selection and we both had fantastic meals. It is by no means cheap, but as I said before, due to our impending marriage, price was of no great concern. Our room was perfect, everything we needed was in there, and the balcony, with a view of the Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop made it even better. The next day, after our wedding ceremony across the road in the Blacksmith's Shop, back in Smiths we had an alcove table booked in the restaurant and we ate from the a la carte menu. The food was absolutely fantastic and the restaurant staff were very attentive and we were made to feel very special. Throughout our stay in the hotel, the staff were really helpful, and although there were other weddings taking place at the same time, we were made to feel like we were the only ones getting married. My bride Sarah, used the Spolit beauty salon for her make up, hair and nails which was very well priced, the staff were very friendly and they did a fantastic job.

Room Tip: Whilst we had a room on the opposite side of the hotel from the motorway by fluke, I would recommend...

Went for one night breaking up our journey into Scotland, and also to do some retail therapy at the outlet, The reception was very good, the lift to our room was very temperamental which had my wife very worried, in fact later that day it broke down and we had to use the stairs as there was no other lift.
The room was lovely, with good facilities, the only trouble was the noise from the motorway was a little invasive.
The evening meal was superb as was the service by the very nice staff, the wine was normal hotel prices, and the breakfast the following morning was lovely.

Room Tip: I would stay again but only if I could get a room at the front of the hotel.

The meals here are very a la carte with chips in a little basket of which you get about 5, the price of the drink is extortionate. When we went it was freezing in the restaurant and we couldn't wait to get home to warm up.
The staff were ok, I wouldn't say they were forthcomingly friendly.

Thanks for the post animalmad i really do appreciate the feedback and take on board your comments. I do note that it was last year, October 2012 that you visited, so its difficult to make much comment about the temperature in the restaurant. That said i have just the other day had to put the main hotel heating back on due to the significant drop in temp. I do hope that you'll drop in again and that the new menus suit better. Ah! Such a shame!
We stayed at Smiths, on the night before our wedding day, thinking that would be the best and easiest to get to The Old Famous Blacksmiths Shop in the morning.

Having arrived at 3pm on a Sunday, we've been told our rooms are not ready, so we decided to have lunch first. Quiet pretentious, "mysterious looking" restaurant, but it was no champagne in the fridge ("is it okay if it's warm?!" We've been asked,eh, what do you think?), everything came with tonnes of ice cubes, the food was ok, nice, but nothing more than pub food.
Asked for our rooms at 4pm, still not ready, the receptionist tried to buy as off with a glass of bucks fizz. (no thanks)
Back at 4.45pm, a bit angry by then, "hello, are the rooms ready?" same receptionist: "no, they still dirty"
That was the point, when we knew we made a bad decision to book this "4 star hotel" . (better to call it 2star....if that)

Around 5pm, we could finally gone up, lovely to wait this much with two under 3's. As soon as we have gone up and opened the door by the corridor, we've seen a lot of dirty dishes on the floor on trays, and a hell of a lot of dirty bed linen everywhere. Absolutely disgusting, but it was nothing to compare to that smell in the room, and that proper dirt and filth everywhere.
Honestly, this place has got no sense of hospitality, I don't know what they doing there, but it's clear, that the only reason for this hotel to survive is the constant and guaranteed trade. This hotel would never ever survive in London for example.

Back to the evening... We've ordered some food up to the room, asked for a bottle of Shiraz and some sandwiches. As I used to work in a hospitality industry, I just had that feeling that I had to check the wine, and surprise, surprise, it wasn't Shiraz , it was a bottle of house red.
(no one mentioned anything then, when we checked out and asked about this, the receptionist said, ah, ye, but it's the same price, what do you want me to do about it?!)
Our sleep was lovely, very comfortable bed, nice pillows.
Breakfast (again)awful, food was really bad, orange juice had lots of ice cubes in it, the staff (average age 18) had the musiC so loud, that we had to ask to turn it down (played this at 8am:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRXReLJMMuQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Oh well, never mind, our wedding was lovely, we truly enjoyed it. Supposed to check out at11.00am, but we thought as we couldn't have our rooms in time, 40 mins late check out not going to hurt. We've been told, that is some problems with the process, as it seems that someone has already checked us out. Minutes later, weve heard, that a member of staff took the cost of our stay from our card as they thought we have left without paying. Because, they said, it happened before.

Very disappointing stay, unfortunetly. I've contacted our wedding coordinator on the 27th of August and asked her the pass our comments to the general manager, which she did, but still no answer from him. Maybe now?

Just a quick suggestion if you planning to have your wedding at Gretna:
DONT STAY AT SMITHS!
