We enjoyed our stay. Jimmy the owner, was only too helpful. We recommend this hotel
as it is clean, comfortable with all amenities and in an excellent position for touring in Galloway and Dumfries. Beautiful views from the hotel all round. Liz and Don Shaw

This was a repeat meal.
The first time, last year, it was nothing special -fair -middling food one main was awful but we were guests so could not say too much.
We invited guests this time and to say it was TERRRIBLE is a HUGE UNDERSTATEMENT IT WAS DREADFUL.
"Sorry there are no steaks left" - the local butcher and apparently supplier to the hotelwas in with his wife eating! "We have gammon steaks" . Gammon steaks listed under "Steaks"
Starters were Chicken goujons with garlic dip - school dinner fayre and bought in.
Pate with toast - a slab of supermarket pate with triangles of cold toast had to ask for butter. Garlic mushrooms - sliced button mushrooms, burnt with triangles of toasted white pan bread of which two or three were eaten. A fish cake which was gluey and over salty.
Mains were steak pie which was fine. Cottage pie which consisted of we suspect recycled sliced potatoes in a layered gravy/mince conglomerate topped with a crust of burnt cheddar of which two or three forkfuls were eaten. Egg, cheese and pineapple salad - a fist sized lump of grated cheddar, half an egg on top decoratively surrounded by a pineapple ring cut into 4 the rest of the salad consisted of some sliced iceberg lettuce, 2 bits of tomato, 1 inch long piece of red pepper, a few slices of red onion, a few slices of cucumber - probably around 80p worth of ingredients - no dressing and came with a separate bowl of 3 teaspoonfuls of "there's your salad cream" time warp 1950s. Never before having been served salad cream in a restaurant, mayonnaise was requested and did arrive. 2 bowls of chips were served on the side.
We chose not to stay for dessert.
It was requested from the waitress that the cottage pie did not appear on the final bill.
Final bill had cottage pie on it which after challenging was removed. A tip was not left!
This is fine if you are seeking the type of Scottish cuisine which gave the nation such a bad reputation in the 50s & 60s but don't expect to pay retro prices!!!
Don't know how they get away with it - EAT AT THE SELKIRK ARMS along the road we've been there before and all was delicious - pity we didn't choose it this time.

I have always stayed at Arden House on business many times and found it to be a gem of a hotel. This time was for leisure and my wife joined me. I was concerned that I could have over hyped the hotel to my wife, but the concern was ill founded as she agreed that the Copeland Family run hotel and staff are the best we have ever had the pleasure to meet.
This hotel is a must if you are visiting Scotland it’s a GEM.

Having stayed here a number of times it’s always a pleasure to return. After a hard day there’s no need to go anywhere else to dine .Have a relaxing drink in pleasant surrounding and friendly staff and owner. If you don’t see anything on the extensive menu ask Billy and he will cook you a meal you want, try the smoked haddock. This is a very friendly hotel owned and run by good people.

We stayed here for the first time in November and it will not be the last time. It is a true Scottish hotel with a welcome to match. The rooms are of a considerably high standard. Try the food at the bar, the menu changes most days or just ask Billy for something special and he will do his best to accommodate you. You will not be disappointed when you stay here. A truly wonderful experience.
