Glenholme Country House
Ranked #6 of 14 Kirkcudbright B&B and Inns
Reviewed 12 January 2012

My husband and I recently spent a lovely few days in the charming town of Kirkcudbright in Dumfrieshire, Scotland. We stayed at this delightful country home, spoiled by Lawrence and Jennifer. We stayed in the Curzon Room with views across the lawn and fields to the bay. Even with the lashing rain, we were cozy under the luxurious duvets. And, sitting before the fire in the library, listening to classical music or jazz, reading a good book was just what we needed as the storm raged! Lawrence is a terrific cook and the food was yummy. Jennifer has transformed this home with understated Scandinavian style with British country house sensibility. Just lovely! We can't wait to return. One note: remember to bring your own wine to accompany Lawrence's delicious dinners.

Room Tip: Any room is a delight! Rooms on the back are removed a bit from the sound of the weather that comes...

Glenholme was just what we needed. A quiet, comfortable and beautifully-presented bedroom with a four-poster bed. No traffic, no television, just a room full of books, a huge log fire and wonderful, wonderful home-cooked food. Jennifer and Lawrence could not have been more helpful and friendly. We visited in autumn when the light over the garden and the fields was beautiful. I look forward to returning in summer when the garden will be in full bloom.

I'd read about this place in various period living style magazines and thought it might be too good to be true. It isn't. The place is an absolute gem, and as it only has a few rooms I'm reluctant to gush too much in case I can't get in next time. I stayed in The Nicholson room, calming and tranquil in shades of green, with a little writing desk, and a separate dressing area. Didn't really want to get up for breakfast as the exquisitely dressed bed was so-o-o comfortable, but so glad I did as mine host, the dashing Laurence, provides amongst other things the best scrambled eggs. Ask to see Jennifer's linen room, and try to resist buying something gorgeous while you're there. I gather they've not been at Glenholme long but you feel as if the house has been in the family for ever and they are the current custodians who have turned it into something very special. It's Edwardian and elegant yet also incredibly homely. Actually, I rather wish it were my home...
There. Now I've probably spoiled it and you'll all want to rush off and stay there. Should have kept my mouth shut.

Glenholme Bed and Breakfast is a hidden gem. On this website superlatives are too often handed out, the simple class and elegance exhibited prove that in this case it is fully deserved. Whether in the library with an open fire and a good book, or whilst relaxing in the garden in the sunshine, Glenholme proves to be a truly relaxing experience. Laurence and Jennifer are excellent hosts. The three standout points for my wife and I were the attention to detail, the classic elegance and the sublime produce of Laurence's kitchen. This Bed and Breakfast is highly recommended.

I found The Rookery on the web and worried a little that it might have been oversold. I wasn't disappointed. The place is absolutely beautiful. I was in need of a real rest and this has been a complete tonic. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathrooms clean and shining. The living room sofas are soft and cosy and there's tons of room for four to eat comfortably around the dining table. Kirkcudbright is less than five minutes away in the car. It's a great spot for touring round Dumfries and Galloway. So much to see. We didn't have great weather but I loved it anyway. Let's hope the sun shines when we come back....

We stayed at Glenholme Country House B/B on our way home from a short break in the wonderful small town of Kirkcudbright famed for the many famous artist who have visited the area over the past 100 years, some of whom stayed and made their homes here. This is an extremely magical area which forms part of Dumfries & Galloway. A really must visit place.
Our last night was spent staying at the Glenholme Country House B/B just on the outskirt of Kirkcudbright. This is the most wonderful place to spend a night or two or more.
If you are looking for somewhere small and friendly with the best of all things charming then look no further, the accommodation is utterly stunning, the food is mouth wateringly out of this world, the decor almost makes you cry with delight, and as for your hosts Jennifer & Laurence, two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.
Glenholme Country House is totally unforgettable and quite simply has to be one of the most lovely places to lay your head, and we have lain our heads in some truly lovely places. 10/10
The Rookery, is a self catering cottage in the grounds of Glenholme Country House and it too is spectacular. Don’t just take my word for it check it out for yourself.

Room Tip: This is a real gem
