“Not bad for a townhouse”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Although it was built as a castle, it was more a residence for a wealthy merchant. Thus it is an interesting comparison. Much of the ground floor exists, with the cellars and kitchen, and there's very good interpretation panels. Being right in town means it's very easy to visit, and worth exploring.

“Well preserved”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

A small "Keep" type castle that was never a castle. It was built after the age when defensive castles were no longer needed in the area. Although it looks like a castle it was really more like a manor house.
Although the roof is missing the castle is well preserved and there is a lot of information on what each room was used for. I particularly liked the small room from which the Laird could spy on his guests in the main hall.

“Another interesting HS property”

Situated by the quayside, a building that demonstrates the move away from total fortification towards more comfortable living. Interesting and informative noticeboards.

“Imposing and interesting”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

This very large castle is situated right in the centre of Kirkcudbright and it is a very imposing construction that can be enjoyed externally as well as by formal entrance. It gives character to the town and can be enjoyed both from an artitectural as well as historical point of view. Kirkcudbright town centre and harbour are lovely and we would recommend visiting the town to take in the atmosphere of trhe castle in its position adjacent to the water. There is a town walk set out on a board in the car park which is well worth taking.

“Right in the heart of Kirkudbright”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

Worth a visit if you are a member. Interesting in that it is right in the middle of the town and it less a castle and more a town house pretending to be one.
