Love Hornel art...lovely to visit his home.
Arrived during kirkcudbright art week so double sided sword, unfortunately difficult to see home as it was as displays, but very fortunate to speak to a lace making crafter, so very interesting! If we ever return here when in Scotland I would like to see more of Hornels home and gardens as they look beautiful, hats off to NTS!

Broughton House and Garden is situated in the High Street of the Artists Town of Kirkcudbright. It is well worth a visit for anyone interested in art and or gardens.
It was originally the the of A E Hornell the artist and member of the Glasgow Boys. The house is almost as he left it with many of his paintings on show. It also contains a huge collection of Burns books. The day we were there on of the guides has a fantasic knowledge of Burns which made our visit more interesting. One nice touch was no keep off notices or roped off areas, just holly leaves in the chair seats!
The gardens are lovely, not huge but very interesting with a great range of unusual plants. A E Hornell must have had a keen interest in both plants and collecting unusual and interesting garden ornaments. There was plenty of old wraught iron seats to sit on and enjoy the flowers.
A very enjoyable visit.

This is a real find that a friend took us to as part of a tour of this area of Scotland. The garden was full of a variety of plants and the layout of the garden was well done. We walked around for over an hour and enjoyed the beautiful blossoms a great deal. We also toured the house which was of interest to us and caught a glimpse of what it was like to live in years ago. Go to see this garden if you can when in Scotland.

Set in a lovely town with plenty to see, the art here at Broughton House was very distinctive and memorable. The garden was delightful and truly worth a visit - if you head to the back, you can see the sea from here.

I have already written in another review about Cally Palace Garden, an amazing place to see three thousand varieties set in an ancient three acre walled garden but the crammed acre at Broughton House is a quite different experience altogether with benches to sit on to admire the luscious planting ! The small ponds were a delight and everywhere you turned were yet more fantastic sights ! We didn't visit the House this time as we've explored that before and I just wanted to express my enthusiasm for the grounds ! You will not be disappointed !
