But it's also a great house to see wonderful art (EA Hornel) and imagining the artist in residence. The gardens are beautiful - visit in the height of summer for the best experience.

You get the feel of the artist as you wander through the house. In the studio are unfinished paintings.
The gardens are a treat also.

You could easily walk past the handsome but unremarkable facade of this property but you would be missing a treat. After a long chat with a knowledgeable member of staff, we started to explore this unexpectedly large house. When turning a corner to enter the gallery, we were astonished at the size and beauty of the room. It didn't seem possible that that it could be contained within a relatively modest exterior.

Aside from the paintings, I particularly enjoyed the collection of samplers and my partner spent a good while looking at the collection of Japanese memorabilia.

All this before I even mention the garden, which is a must see on its own. The large plot ends at the harbour and is full of winding paths, ponds and a glorious array of plants.

Kircudbright is an attractive and interesting town in its own right but you should not leave without visiting this property.

Well informed and enthusiastic staff. The house and gardens take you back to another, genteel, era. With the national trust membership this was a great place to spend a couple of informative hours

First impressions can be so deceptive , and I think that statement applies to the house and the artist who owned it and worked there. On arrival you are met by a pleasant Georgian facade but not an outstanding one . I was aware of the work of the artist who worked here but had only ever seen his art as prints or copies and had always found it good but "fussy" and cluttered . It just proves that you have to see the original to form a valid opinion ! Both my wife and I expressed the same word when we entered his gallery. WOW and we were not alone , so many of the other visitors had a similar reaction. The garden to the rear is another delight and once you have learnt some of the history of the artist you are able to see why it was fashioned as we now see it.
The staff also deserve a word of praise , they are very knowledgable and were very helpful during our visit.

Thank Gavin P
