We visited the Kirkcudbright Bay Hotel last weekend for a meal with family during a weekend away. We were looking forward to dining here as we had heard good reports about the food and the menu looked very nice, however, we were sorely disappointed.
Our main issues were:
1. There was some kind of communication issue between the waiter and the kitchen. 5 out of 8 meals arrived incorrectly. One person's starter didn't arrive with the others and this had to be requested (it arrived after everyone else finished their starter). One person had asked for a plain rib eye steak without any garnish, which arrived covered in tomato and mushrooms with a salad garnish (this was easily rectified and we could have accepted this). Another person had ordered a plain sirloin steak cooked well done, this arrived with the same accompaniments as the first steak but was rare when cut into. A forth guest ordered pork with mashed potatoes, this plate arrived with fatty poor quality meat with 3 different types of potatoes on it (chips, roast potatoes and mashed potatoes). The potatoes took up over 1/2 the plate, it looked very unappetising. I had ordered vegetable Wellington which arrived 5-10 minutes after everyone else's meal. The pastry was soggy instead of crispy and had obviously been microwaved. They had clearly forgotten about this meal.
2. The service was shockingly poor. At first our waiter seemed pleasant, however, after issues with the starters he seemed to avoid our table like the plague. We had to call him over to order more drinks and at no point did he approach us to ask how our meal was. It was clear from glancing at the table that we had not enjoyed our meal but he did not offer to rectify the situation. Once we had finished our meal the plates sat for 20minutes before we eventually had to call the waiter over again to ask for the bill. Again, he did not ask if we had enjoyed our meal or clear the plates.
I had lunch in Mulberry's round the corner that day and it was lovely. I was really expecting a similar quality of food and service from the Kircudbright Bay Hotel, especially when the food was moderately priced. We visit Kircudbright every year and I will most definitely not be returning to the Kirkcudbright Bay Hotel next year.
