Best Western Dundee Woodlands Hotel

Stayed for 9 nights with 5 other golfers. We played Carnoustie and 6 St. Andrews courses. The hotel was comfortable and clean and situated just 10 minutes from Carnoustie and 25 minutes from St. Andrews. Room rates
were much lower than St. Andrews and the location was much quieter without all the visiting golfers found in St. Andrews. The hotel restaurant was also open after 9.00pm for a late dinner. We found two excellent restaurants in Carnoustie; The Blue Marlin for seafood and the Station Hotel
for pub grub. I can recommend both without any qualms. The Blue Marlin
special ordered Dover Sole which was a highlight of our trip. Even having to play four rounds in a steady rain, the trip was great. We drove an hour and a half to Edinburgh for the Tattoo on Saturday night. The hotel offers free internet, but my Dell laptop couldn't see their router. Seems the problem only occurs with dell laptops. They did try to correct the problem, but failed.

Aong with my cousin and our spouses, we invited our 92-year-old aunt to the Woodlands for Sunday lunch. In the past, we have thoroughly enjoyed numerous such occasions at the nearby Taychreggan Hotel (see separate review), but our aunt, who likes nothing better than a nice meal out, fancied a change. Our 'welcome' at reception was symptomatic of the whole experience - as we walked up to the desk, the receptionist turned her back on us and went into a back office, from which we had to summon her for directions to the dining-room. This indifference was echoed when we asked a passing staff member (manager?) whether there was a Sunday roast on: he replied that he had no idea. Our waiter, however, was able to advise us that there was 'roast lamb with all the trimmings' which sounded so good that all five of us unhesitatingly ordered it.
Sadly, the meal fell far short of its description. A couple of slices of lukewarm lamb topped with a soggy, surely frozen, Yorkshire pudding and nestling in the hollow, a portion of frozen peas. The other vegetable component of the dish was three potatoes, halfway between boiled and roast, placed strategically around the plate in a small lake of gravy. The mint jelly we asked for turned out to be a dish of dried-out, almost black, mint sauce.
I read in one review that the hotel enjoys the services of an excellent chef. Unfortunately, Sunday must be his day off. In other circumstances we would have complained, but none of us wanted to cause embarrassment to our elderly aunt (who later in fact expressed great disappointment at the meal) , so we all just contented ourselves with the resolution that we will never grace the Woodland's doorstep again.

We stayed here for three nights from June 27 to June 30th. We have two kids 7 and 9. They loved the pool and the food. This hotel is in a great location, it's residential yet close to the beach and a good running/walking trail on the shore. There is also a nice city rock garden nearby. The town has several dining options on Brook and Gray streets. Our favorite restaurant was the Glass Pavillion on the Espanade. They were open early until late, the food was great and they have a fenced in kids place area with a sandbox and swings. There were a lot of people dining there without kids. They serve a high tea if you get there early enough.

Back to the hotel. We had requested a family room as mentioned in another review. It was big enough and worked out well. The hotel is definitely dated, but it was clean. The made to order breakfast was really good as were the workout facilities. The gym and pool had limited hours, so just make sure to check before hand.

Now for the bad news. Two things. Smokers stand really close to the front doors, so the entry way smells strongly of smoke. Secondly, there was a wedding on Saturday night that included a trail of smoking, drinking guests. It was fine until midnight. We had been in bed for a couple hours, then the band woke up the entire hotel. We waited for ten minutes thinking management would deal with it. No luck. We called the front desk, no answer. My husband went to the front desk with numerous other guests and the employee was in the bar, where he didn't hear the phone. He told everyone it would be over shortly and that a manger came on at 7am... The music went on for another 45 minutes. It was obnoxous enough that there was a line in the lobby at 7am. They comp'd a percentage or a meal in our case. It was loud enough to rattle the windows and pictures on the wall and managed to wake up the kids. We verified that there were not going to be any other events during our stay. The remaining days were fine. So the lesson learned is to ask if there are any events going on during your stay. I wouldn't stay if there is even a chance of it.

On arrival check in was fast and efficient.
My room was a reasonable size, had all the usual stuff you would expect and was clean and fresh.
I ate in the restaurant in the evening and the food was pretty good, there was a fair choice on the menu.
Breakfast was a good mix of cereals, fruit and cooked options.
A definite plus point was having use of the gym and pool.
For whatever reason I couldn't get access to the wireless internet but it didn't detract from the enjoyment of my stay.

I will certainly use this hotel the next time I am in Dundee.

Hotel is set in nice quiet street in Broughty Ferry amongst trees in small grounds - loads of parking. Broughty Ferry itself is a very nice place - small castle, childrens play parks, beautiful beach and nice little shops and eating places. We had to carry our luggage upstairs as there is no lift. The room we got in the hotel was spacious with a large very comfy bed and pillows. The room was nicely decorated and had free wifi connection - great. The bathroom was newly done with a large shower cubicle (no bath in this room). The shower was not powerful. The room was very very warm - we were apparantly above the kitchen but we did have a fan in our room which was thoughtful and we slept with the window open so the room did eventually cool down. Breakfast was good (cold buffet and made to order hot breakfast) - all good quality. We had evening meal in the very pleasant but not too formal restaurant. Excellent food apart from the smoked haddock risotto which had no actual bits of fish in the portion. But the food was very good and a good choice of menu. We used the leisure facilities which was very nice. The pool was lovely and warm and there is a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Overall a well run hotel in a nice area.
