“Awkward service and disappointing lunch”
Reviewed 9 March 2014

Here for a quick lunch with a few colleagues from the office. For menus we were handed pieces of crumpled paper! First impressions do count these days! The menu was rather limited and I settled for the safe choice of fish and chips.

i did feel that service was slow and almost unfriendly, our waiter and waitress were both quiet (in a negative way) and awkward. Anyway we got a nice bowl of bread. Our food came about 20 mins after ordering. My dish was very, very greasy. I understand fish and chips are deep friend but this was ridiculous and I only could stomach 1/3 of my meal. I will not be rushing back.

“Busy night handled well”
Reviewed 2 March 2014 via mobile

Went in mid week for a bite to eat with my partner.

Place was busy for a Wednesday night with only one member of staff on although you would not realise. Service was fast and good was great.

Not our first visit here and definitely not our last.

The good is of big portions and always tasty and fresh. If you like good home cooked food at a good price and service with a smile head down to compass!

“A bit disappointed”
Reviewed 20 February 2014 via mobile

I was a little disappointed with this. I had the Cullen skink with a work colleague. It was a bit expensive and lacked the taste of a good Cullen skink.

“The Compass”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

This is more of a restaurant than a bar, but you can go in for drinks only. Service is excellent as is the food. The chef is really inventive and the food is really good value. You can watch the kitchen from the restaurant which is always reassuring. Definitely worth a visit.

“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

I have visited The Compass many times and always had a fantastic time. It's a lovely place to go in the evenings as it's nice and cosy and very romantic with lots of candles. It's normally nice and busy in the evenings too so the atmosphere always has a nice buzz about it.
The food has always been spot on with seasonal produce and all of a very high quality. It's traditional bistro style food such as fish and chips and steak pie etc, however the quality is excellent and definitely a lot more special than standard pub grub. The fish and chips are to die for and the portions are very substantial. Also been here for breakfast and had the most amazing bacon with maple syrup on french toast. The full scottish breakfast really hits the spot too.
Only criticism is that the service, although very friendly, can often be slow and also the gravy on the sunday roast is always watery.
