Used this hotel for a 1 night stop over on my way from London to Oban. Room was comfortable & clean. Location was pretty good. About a block off a main touristy High Street area. Staff was friendly and the self catering breakfast was great! Lots of food and the staff really kept the place clean and food coming out from the kitchen.

No real complaints and no real super praise for the hotel. All in all it was a fine hotel for a quick stay in Edinburgh.

Dear Guest,

Thanks for leaving a review about the hotel on Trip Advisor. I am delighted you enjoyed your overnight stay.

Our complimentary breakfast is very popular with guests and now we have added on hot items such as egg and sausage the breakfast is proving more popular than ever.

Once again thanks for the review and I hope the next time you stay it is for more than one night.

Our experience at this Holiday Inn Express was excellent. The service was consistently helpful and outstanding. When our rooms weren't quite ready at check-in, we were offered tea and hot chocolate. Every question was graciously answered, directions were cheerfully given, laundry service located. I can't speak too highly of the front desk staff who were wonderful!

The rooms were new and well kept-up and the price was very reasonable. Breakfast was very good, with a large selection of items to choose from. And the location of the hotel just a block away from the Royal Mile was outstanding. Would I stay here again? Absolutely!

Dear Guest,

Thanks for the great review.

As I have said many times previously when responding to reviews the team I have at the hotel are second to none. The front desk guys offer great customer service and have great knowledge of Edinburgh. The housekeeping and maintenance teams at the hotel keep the place looking like new. The hotel is only just over 2 years old but it still looks as good as the day we opened.

Once again thanks for the review and I hope you find time to visit Edinburgh in the future.

Kind Regards
General Manager

I was really happy that we chose this hotel which is situated in cowgate. It is very much at the heart of the city in the old town area. It is close to all the aminities plus it is very quiet. We were able to enjoy with our kids as it was in walking distance to waverly brige- 10mins, waverly station-7mins. Royal mile- 5 mins etc. There are very good restraunts within 5-15 mins from the hotel. It is a convenient location for anyone who wishes to stay near the city but not paying too much.
It is good that the room accomodates 2 adults and 2 children. I should say the room is slightly small for 4 but we only used the room during nights and nevertheless a very excellent hotel to stay.
I should say about the staff, they were really happy to help with a smile which made your day and your stay a very happy and enjoyable one. The lobby was was immaculate and the facilities were excellent. Wifi was available in the lobby and also had internet facilities in the room, but you need to have a laptop to make use of this facility. Breakfast was included in the price of the hotel and the food was good.
It is a very excellent hotel, at a good location, great staff and a good room.
I will recommend this hotel to anyone who travel to edinburgh because of its convenience.

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for leaving a review.

I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at the hotel. Our central location and our kids 18 and under stay for free policy means we are a very popular hotel for families.

The staff at the hotel are our greatest asset. They really pride themselves on the fantastic customer service they offer our guests. They have a great knowledge of Edinburgh so can advise you on all aspects of your time in the city.

The free wifi and complimentary breakfast are 2 great benefits of this hotel and I am very pleased you enjoyed both of those benefits.

Once again thanks for the review and I would hope that if you visited Edinburgh again in the future you would stay with us again.

Many Thanks

We got this amazing hotel for 83 pounds a night. It was just ideal. The location was absolutely wonderful - you're right in the middle of the city, and you're never far from anything, be in the Royal Mile, the castle, the museums, the restaurants, etc. We easily walked to Arthur's Seat.

Parking isn't included, and it's expensive. A block away is a public lot they have a small discount for. I think we spent 13 pounds a day there for the parking.

The rooms were just fine - simple, but clean and had everything we needed.

The included breakfast, was a let-down. It's a madhouse down there in the mornings, and they know it, with signs saying you can always take your food to the lobby to eat. The offerings were slim - it's truly a continental breakfast. I thought it was a full breakfast, so I was disappointed. Oh well, it was free.

The elevator is one that needs your key to do anything, even return to the lobby. It takes five tries every time (even for the staff). It's just plain obnoxious. (And if your room is near the elevator, all I can say is I'm sorry! The speaker loudly announces it's every move and we heard it down the hall. "DOOR OPENING! GOING UP! DOOR CLOSING! GOING DOWN! FLOOR THREE!")

All in all, we HIGHLY recommend this if the price is good. It was a terrific stay.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time to leave a good review. I am really pleased that you enjoyed our very central location, everything in walking distance is ideal for a city break to Edinburgh . It is disappointing to know that you were not happy with what we offer for breakfast, what we provide is the brand standard of the Holiday Inn Express. I do appreciate your comments concerning the crowded buffet area, unfortunately it is difficult to have any control over the time that our guests choose to eat breakfast, especially during the very busy months. Your feedback concerning the speaker in the elevator have been taken on board - it is the first time that any of our guests have brought it to our attention, so thank you. We can certainly have the volume adjusted by our engineers. I am glad, that aside from these issues you had a terriffic stay and your recommendation is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Location: the hotel is perfectly located for sightseeing. The royal mile is literally just around the corner. We drove up to Edinburgh and parked out car at the parking down the hill from the hotel (make sure to have your parking ticket validated by the hotel for a discounted parking rate). There appears to be a homeless shelter or something similar on the corner when walking back from the parking and there were homeless people sitting outside the parking entrance. They didn't bother us but some people may find this unpleasant especially at night.

Check-in: we arrived early and dropped off our bags for storage (free) and came back a couple of hours to check in. Check-in was very fast and the receptionist was friendly.

Room: the room was normal British size (i.e. small compared to hotel rooms in the United States). The room and bathroom were very clean. The only minor problem with the room was the heating. It was almost impossible to get the room warm enough. The beds were quite firm and I prefer softer beds.

Breakfast: standard continental breakfast buffet but with sausages and scrambled eggs. The breakfast room is fairly small but we never had any problems finding a vacant table.

Overall: excellent location for tourists looking to explore the Old Town.

It's hard to beat the service we've received at the Holiday Inn Express -- Royal Mile. While this hotel is advertised as "no frills," "budget," or "just-the-basics," that's certainly not what we experienced. From checkin to the present, our stay has been very pleasurable.

To begin with, the evening desk clerk, Craig, was, I believe, the most helpful hotel receptionist I've ever encountered. He was every bit the concierge in a hotel that is not supposed to have a concierge service. From ordering us take-out Indian food (exceptional) to recommending tours, calling for taxis, fixing a stopped up sink, delivering a fan, helping us hook up to the Internet (and the list goes on), Craig and the staff at the HI Express - Royal Mile, bent over backwards to accomodate us during our stay. Exceptional and better than I've received in hotels that charge three times the price.

Also, while it is billed as having a free Continental Breakfast, it had an impressive selection: scrambled eggs, sausages, several cereals, cheeses, fresh fruit, yogurt, croissants, toast, milk and juices. It was always a filling start to a busy day.

The hotel is also centrally located close to the Royal Mile and taxi's are not necessarily needed. Just pop around the corner and hike the hill to most of Edinburgh's main attractions. Other hotels that boast the same locational advantages run three times the price (and tend to be not as friendly - as I found out when asking directions). This hotel will save you time and money when it comes to transportation.

The entire hotel gets kudos for its attempts at reducing its carbon footprint. Most lights in the rooms are LED, instead of incandescent. Not to mention that there is no power in the room unless your key card is inserted in the power slot.... This eliminates the waste from lights left on when the customer is gone. The elevator also requires the room card to operate. This can be a bit tricky, but once you've got the hang of it, it does make a great deal of good sense and I applaud it.

We did have a few snafu's during our stay, but the staff was courteous and quick to resolve all of the issues to our satisfaction. I really am impressed with this little hotel and have never given a higher recommendation. To top everything off....they have something I cannot get in the States.... BULMER'S PEAR CIDER. And Craig always had a cold bottle and a glass of ice waiting for me at the end of a long day. Ahhhhhhhh!

Dear Guest

Thank you so very much for the great review that you took the time to write. I am thrilled that you enjoyed our central location, breakfast, as well as supporting our carbon footprint initiatives, not forgetting the Pear cider. It is always really lovely to be able to pass your comments onto our staff - Craig has a great energy for looking after our customers. Thank you, and I hope that you might have the opportunity to come back and stay with us again.

Stayed here for a couple of nights in June 2010. Being just a block from the Royal Mile, it's perfect for sightseeing all the way to the Edinburgh Castle about a mile away. Lots of dining options nearby for lunch and dinner but for breakfast, the included buffet is just great!! Room was fairly small but for the price, it was alright. High Speed Wi-Fi Internet access was free and even after we checked out, we spent some time in the lobby surfing and watching one of the World Cup soccer matches on the TV there. Friendly staff who held our bags for us while we spent some more time sightseeing even after we checked out. Also, we had one of the local bus lines pick us up conveniently from the hotel for a day trip to Loch Lomond and the Scottish Highlands.
