“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

My partner and I enjoyed an excellent lunch at this characterful restaurant. The 'special calamari' was one of the best starters I have had in a long time and the lemon chicken tagine was not only a little different but beauitifully spices and very tasty. (One suggestion is that couscous should be included in this dish and not as an extra). Service was a very good combination of professionalism and friendliness. We will definitely return.

“Fantastic food, cosy place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014 via mobile

Together with our friends, we enjoyed a fantastic meal, the special dish of the day was the lamb, and it just melted in the mouth. Our starters and main meals were really enjoyed, would highly recommend this restaurant. See for yourselves......

“Super food and super ambience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

Visited recently as part of a work group while in Edinburgh for a few days. Was here once before and on both occasions I thought this was a really great restaurant. While the menu has good variety, there is a Moroccan theme for a number of the dishes. Had seared scallops and black pudding starter which was very good - might have had the scallops seared just a little more, but a personal preference rather than a complaint. Had lamb tagine for main and it was excellent. All the party seemed to enjoy the meal. We had house wines (both red and white) and they were perfectly good quality. Service was friendly and efficient. Ambience is very cool and a welcome change to the oak panel decor in many of the eateries in Old Edinburgh. Really this is a very good restaurant and I will definitely visit again.

“Nice Atmosphere but food is dependent on your taste”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

We past Maison Bleue a few times and liked the way it looked inside so decided one night to give it a try. The atmosphere was very nice and the staff very attentive and pleasant, however they have crammed perhaps one too many tables into the small space. The center table we were at was located so close that it was difficult to keep a conversation going and not get distracted by other tables and conversations.

The wine we ordered was also average, with one Chardonnay on the list we selected that and it did not really impress. The food is definitely for a specific taste with many of the dishes seeming to have an abundance of black pepper being added to it. My partner had the Lamb that was most definitely spicy an in fact a little too hot for her taste. I chose the Venison, that was cooked perfectly medium, but the accompany cranberry sauce was too sour and overpowering. The potatoes were also dry and a little over cooked. Dessert was better but again let down by not looking at the details. My Key Lime Pie was tasty but let down by the overly thick base at the corners.

We were also a little taken aback by the fact that on the website when making reservation it states that on weekends you will only be allowed the table for 2 hours. This kind of indicated the restaurant was more interested in pure profit than an enjoyable time for the clients.

All in all the restaurant was average but for the cost I would have expected more attention to the quality of the cooking and flavour mix.... but this could also be down to my own taste and others may like this.
