The house is located within a securely gated courtyard giving you privacy to sit outside (although not for us in January). There must be around 50 restaurants (mostly of a high standard with some wee gems that are worth finding out about) and takeaways within a half mile radius of the house. There is also a supermarket across the road and a fruit and veg market just across the river. Ocean Terminal is just a 10 minute walk - not even worth waiting for a bus. Talking of buses they seem to come every 5 minutes to take you up to the town centre (tip:- buy a day ticket for £4 for unlimited use). The house itself is superb, with everything you need and the owner lives next door if any help is required. All in all an amazing find and we'll be back.
We booked this little courtyard cottage for 4 of us over New Years. It was so reasonably priced given the time of year (so many of the hotels directly in Edinburgh were so over priced). At first I was a little concerned about being a little out of Edinburgh but I needn’t have been. In fact I am so glad we stayed in Leith which is a lovely area we all ended up preferring to Edinburgh centre.
The cottage itself is small and cosy, but plenty of room for 4. Margaret, (the lovely lady who lived next door) greeted us, showed us around and gave us all the information we needed about the cottage and the area (she also kindly left some biscuits, milk and wine!). The kitchen is spotless and well equipped with everything you need if you wanted to cook/eat in (t-bags and coffee are provided). There’s ample room in the cosy living and dining area. Two beds, one double room, one twin room and one bathroom between both. All towels and bedding were provided.
We found we could walk into Edinburgh, which we did the first day. My mums quite a slow walker so it took about 45mins but I imagine if you got a march on you could do it in about 30mins. Alternatively there are 3 buses you can hop on just outside the cottage that take you to the centre of town, or an Uber was only about £7-8.
The cottage is right in the centre of beautiful Leith. There so many delicious restaurants right on the doorstep, we were spoiled for choice! There is also the indoor shopping centre a short walk away as well as the Royal Britannia, well worth the view.
We stayed over New Year, of course Edinburgh was amazing, but was crowded and noisy until very late. We were able to cab home quite easily (even on New Years) and sleep peacefully in Leith!
I can’t recommend enough staying here, it was lovely to get out of busy Edinburgh and head back to Leith each day where we ate each evening.
Thanks for letting us use your little home and apologies for the glitter from my sparkly top!
This property is a true hidden gem. Located in Leith - a vibrant, up-and-coming area of Edinburgh, literally everything you might need is just on the doorstep: a cashpoint machine, Sainsbury's, take-away offering everybody's favourite, Thai restaurant, 'locals' pub, smart bistros/bars, quality seafood/fish restaurants, bus stop with buses running every 5 minutes into town, free parking and of course, The Shore! The accomodation is spacious, clean and well-equipped and Margaret was extremely amenable and helpful. Spot on!
What can I say...just a perfect property for a stay in Edinburgh...hidden away from the bustle of Leith and behind a large arched doorway lies this delightful mews cottage tastefully updated with high quality bathroom and kitchen. The owner lives next door and is kindness herself with welcoming wine and shortbread
There is plenty of on street parking but there is no need to use your car as the buses leave every 5 minutes to the City Centre. A Sainsburys Local is just across the road and the area abounds with pubs, cafes and restaurants ( only problem is which to choose).
If you follow the Leith Waterway you can walk beside water into the city.
Our only regret is not having time to use the courtyard seating area.
The only comment I would make is to recommend that a note recommending the Lothian Buses SMART phone APP is placed in the very informative property handbook. This bus app is amazing.....just tap in your destination and it directs you to the bus stop, tells you when the next buses are due and then tracks you along the bus route. [note the buses only take exact change).
A perfect little hide away and Margaret, the host, gave us such a warm welcome. The House by the Shore is perfectly located near restaurants, pubs, cafes and a Sainsbury store is just over the road. The house itself is spotlessly clean and has everything you need. Is is warm and cosy and very inviting. My partner and I had a wonderful relaxing break here and are hoping to return again next year. Rhona and Margaret, you have a little gem of a place there. Thanks for your hospitality.
Rhona's 2 bedroomed terraced house was lovely. We were very warmly welcomed and even had a lovely welcome pack on our arrival. The location is great with the bus stop to town being right on the door step and if you didn't want to go into town there was plenty to do out and about around the property with lots of lovely restaurants and pubs. The house was cosy, tidy and welcoming. I would say the only small thing I would mention is that it would have been nice to have some bathroom toiletries to use.
We had a lovely stay in this clean, comfortable and well-equipped house. It is very well located at the shore, easy parking and easy access to the city center.
The host Maragert is very welcomed and ready to help immediately with any questions. Highly recommended!
