“Edinburgh's hospitality at its best!”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

Having stayed in this Guest House more than once many years ago, I was yet again not disappointed with its comfort and situation but most of all with the warmth and friendliness of the proprietor. I was made to feel at home from the minute of my arrival. The breakfast was excellent and for a vegetarian there is plenty of choice to move around the menu. Edinburgh is a very friendly city and Gil Dun is a wonderful example of this.

Annie from Cornwall.

My husband and i spent 4 nights at Gil Dun Guest House in Sept. 2013 Bill was most welcoming and provided information on public transportation and special events occurring during our stay. The city bus is just around the corner with access to the Royal Mile and New Town, and there are several good restaurants within walking distance. Our room was large and quite lovely. We had to leave very early before breakfast was served on two days, once to catch a highlands tour, and once to the airport. Bill arranged taxis and gave us access to the breakfast room for cereal, fresh fruit and rolls. On my husbands birthday he brought a bottle of wine to our room. We highly recommend Gil Dun as a perfect home-base for exploring Edinburgh.

All the staff helpful and such a willingness to assist and make your experience pleasant. Nice 15 minute walk to town.

Beautiful country...and we found Nessie! I hope to visit this beautiful city again!

I do believe that this was the best B&B we have ever stayed in. The room was spotless and the bed, quilt, pillows and cushions were extremely comfortable. The en-suite was small but very well designed and this was also spotless with soft towels (including a face cloth) and shower gel and shampoo which we really appreciated as we had arrived in Edinburgh by plane.
The breakfast was cooked to order and was excellent with a good choice of hot and cold food.
Gerry, the host, was very helpful with suggestions of places to eat and drink.
Maggie, who served breakfast, was also very attentive, nothing was too much trouble.
The house is outside of the main town area but was only a 15 to 20 minute walk to the royal mile but we ate locally at the Salisbury arms, the Reverie and Hellers kitchen and we would recommend all of these places and they were all only a short walk away.

Room Tip: We were in room 1 on the ground floor, a lovely double room

My fiancé and I stayed here in December 2012 at the beginning of our Scotland/England trip. To be fresh off the plane and arrive at the Guest House was wonderful. The place is everything you need to visit Edinburgh. While it was the off-season, overall the inn was quiet, warm, and very comfortable. An excellent value! We were here for a total of 3 nights and wished we could have stayed longer. The location was perfect…we walked everywhere in town, only taking the bus back one night because we were wiped out (about a 10 minute ride). The inn is about a 20 minute walk to downtown, but is also located very close to Arthur’s Seat (if you are planning to “hike”). The included breakfast was wonderful! Know that you can just ask for eggs and bacon if that’s all you want! We took a taxi in and a taxi out (which Gerry graciously booked for us) so I cannot comment on the parking (but honestly, I wouldn’t have a car while in Edinburgh at all…nowhere to park anywhere…plus everything is a close walk). Whenever we had questions, Gerry and Bill always had a unique and special answer (not only about Edinburgh, but other parts of Scotland). I would stay here again without hesitation.

Very ordinary looking B&B just off very busy road wows on the inside. Bedrooms look like you're in a four star hotel with lovely furnishings and very new looking bathrooms. Breakfast is also outstanding, cooked to order, eggs and smoked salmon my favorite. Two ground floor rooms save you some stairs. Our host Jerry couldn't have been nicer. Served by three bus lines so easy to get in and out of town.

Not luxurious, but a very homey and comfortable place...good value for Edinburgh. We really enjoyed our two night stay here. Host provided lots of information and advice for the area. Good, inexpensive restaurants within walking distance. It's not downtown, but we were able to walk to the castle (and work off some of our delicious breakfast) in about 15-20 minutes (or you can take the bus). We had the twin ensuite room downstairs. Excellent shower, lots of room, nice pillows and very clean. The bed was a little uncomfortable as I could feel the springs, but after a full day in town, I was so tired, I had no problem falling asleep. Nice and quiet room too in a very quaint neighborhood. I would stay here again. Special rate to airport via taxi for 20 pounds.
