Found out about Gil Dun from Rick Steves' Snapshot Scotland. It is a 10-minute bus ride from the Royal Mile. We lost our way to Gil Dun and I called to make sure they knew we'd be late. Gerard helped with directions. He also helped with dinner, getting on the right bus to and from the Royal Mile. We had the large family room on the first floor (American second floor). Beautiful room (see photo) amidst beautiful surroundings. Gil Dun did not require a one-night deposit when I made reservations on their website. Great breakfast and Gil Dun attracts a wide variety of international guests. We enjoyed many interesting conversations including an Irani movie star! I paid with a mix of cash and credit card since Gil Dun adds 5% for any plastic payment. Bus stop is right around the corner. Try the pear yogurt; it is unlike anything we have in the states.

Room Tip: The closest restaurant is Salisbury Arms. It was OK and crowded. Might ask for a second choice.

The bedroom was of a reasonable size, but the en-suite was tiny (about the size of my airing cupboard). When we flushed the toilet I fear we woke all the other guests. The TV was very small and hummed.
I found the proprietor Gerry to be condescending,
I was surprised on my return to see that there was a guest sitting room (per guest photos) if there was Gerry certainly did not inform us of it.
The best thing about Gil Dun is the breakfast.
There is truth in the saying "you get what you pay for".

This is a wonderful Guest house. Gerald and Bill saw to all of the details. And breaks is just to die for. I especially love the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. It's shaped to look like a fish, complete with a lemon tail. And French Pressed coffee. So good. It's located close to some nice places to eat and right on the bus line to get to the heart Edinbourgh. Very wonderful. Be sure to say hello to Troy Boy!

A frustrating start to our visit due to a bus mixup, but once we got settled everything turned out roses. Gerry is so helpful in pointing you in the right direction to town (and the correct buses) in addition to the best sights to see. Billy was on vacation, but Maggie went out of her way to help in every way possible for breakfast and room comfort. The decor is so pretty. And we enjoyed meeting Gerry's dog, Troy!

We stayed at Gil Dun for 2 nights a fortnight ago. From the time we arrived we were made to feel right at home. Access to public transport is a 1 minute walk to the bus stop. We were told what buses to catch and where to get off. Places to eat are a plenty and all within easy walking distance.Gerry will also advise you to the different cuisines available. We would highly recommend staying at Gil Dun.

What a wonderful find the Gil Dun Guest House was for us! Beautifully decorated, fantastic breakfast, helpful and friendly hosts, all in historic Edinburgh. Great value for the dollar. Comfortable beds and spotless rooms. Gerry and Billy go above and beyond to ensure that their guests are happy and comfortable. It is close to a bus stop so getting to and from the city was no problem and done with ease. There are also several good pubs nearby which we enjoyed. This is exactly how you want first class accommodation to be! Thank you Gerry and Billy! We will always remember our time with you at Gil Dun Guest House. You set a standard that others should try to match! You made our time in Edinburgh special!

We stayed at the Gildun for 3 nights at the end of May and couldn't of been happier with our stay!

Gerry and Billy are great hosts and the breakfasts are amazing!

I really do believe you would struggle to find a better place to stay in Edinburgh.

The rooms are well decorated and to a very high standard. As we have stayed 3 times now in 3 different rooms I can advise that all the beds are very comfortable. The rooms come with all you need and the bed is fixed up for you everyday and towels changed if needed.

The location I believe is ideal, it is a 20 minute walk from the city centre or a bus stop is round the corner from the b&b and this take 5 minutes to get to the city centre.
The area where the b&b is, is quiet and very relaxed which is lovely given how busy the city centre can be.

The rate that is charged for your stay is more than reasonable as the breakfast size is very good as is the selection of food, not to mention the quality of the b&b itself.

We will be returning to this b&b next time we are in Edinburgh, in fact, I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
