You can easily imagine being in a local Turkish eating place. Rustic and "cosy". Lunch menu is mezes only. Tasty and filling. Not licenced but BYOB. Live music at night.

We visited in September 2008 & thought the meze was delicious, but a bit over-priced. Also we were not advised that there would be a £3.00 corkage charge to drink our own wine, even though they aren't licensed. It was shown as 'soft drinks' on the bill & we only discovered what the charge was for when we queried it.

As we walked down St. Mary's Street one evening during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we noticed the sound of a classical guitar wafting from the open door of an old storefront just south of the Royal Mile. It turned out to be Empires, a tiny Turkish restaurant, and we decided to wait for the 30 minutes or so it would take to get a table. For much of that time, the friendly gentleman who was managing the place (and perhaps is the owner?) stood outside and chatted with us. The food was very good, the live music excellent, and the overall ambiance was absolutely delightful, albeit in a cramped and cluttered sort of way (which I loved). The place seats only about 30 over two levels. We sat on the street level and did not venture upstairs. We tried to return the following night but because it was a Friday during the Fringe there were no tables to be had. The restaurant is dry and has a BYOB policy, and while we were there they were accepting cash only. Prices were reasonable. The restrooms are located down a very narrow flight of stairs in the basement, which I would recommend not be attempted by anyone with physical disabilities. All in all, a delightful evening.
