“The only down side was that my daughter did not want to return to our normal life”

My daughter and I spent one night at Wallaces Arthouse - we had such a lovely time. Obviously Wallace himself is the biggest attraction however the ambience of the house and the cosy feeling you are surrounded by meant that when we had to eventually leave my daughter did not want to return to our normal life - 'she wanted to stay with Wallace and I could come to visit when I wanted'. My personal hightlights - chippy chips and olive oil and cointreau with vegetable pie - delicious, the company of such a charming and smart man who greeted us with some fizzy when we arrived (juice for my daughter of course) and sleeping like a log in the comfortable beds - I dont think I have slept so goood in years. Go ! I totally recommend Wallaces Arthouse.

We had a really enjoyable stay here. This B&B is a modern apartment inside a 19th century building – very clean and bright and holding Wallace's eclectic collection of art. Our rooms were light, spacious and interestingly furnished and the bathrooms were immaculately clean. The continental-style breakfasts provided a great range of options among cereals, juices, breads and spreads, fruits and excellent coffee as well as good conversation from Wallace himself.

Wallace was a friendly and attentive host, with a great eye for the details that make a difference, such as fresh milk in the bedroom mini-fridge, Turkish Delight and chocolates by the bedside and small arrangements of flowers everywhere. He welcomed us on arrival with a glass of wine and a chat, and made tea for us in the afternoon when we returned from the city. He was also on hand to host an early Sunday morning breakfast for us, which we appreciated. There was a range of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance from Wallace's and he was very happy to advise and help with bookings.

The noise from the street during the night was the only downside to staying here. If you're a light sleeper earplugs might be a good idea.

Thank you so much for your very kind review. I guess being in a city. one can anticipate a bit of street noise but sorry for that ! I am hoping that I shall see you again here and you should remind me to give you the room at the back where Maddy and Lady Govan stayed !!
Love Wallace. xxx

Leith, the ancient trading port of Edinburgh is close to the city's centre, but a world apart. A haven for young discerning professions and tourists, Leith's ancient and modern architecture embeds its history, while its attractions and eating houses offer interest and excellence to the internationally urbane. As a retired internationally renowned designer, Wallace has designed his Art House as an interesting and ecclectic refuge from the pressures of modern life. A most wonderful host, Wallace is sensitive to his guests needs, discretely guiding them to places of interest and managing, somehow, to use his connections to book tables at restaurants others would find full: excellent!

Wallace’s Arthouse Scotland is terrific. It is situated near the harbour of Leith. A popular part of town. It ows its special atmosphere to a modern and sober design without not being cosy. We Dutch call it 'dry'. We found it a such a very special place to stay we want to recommand it to the whole world. Although a gem must stay a gem. And above that, it is still more appealing than it sounds.

The place is run by a white-bearded Scotsman called Wallace Shaw. He shows all the prejudices Europeans may have of the Brits: nice humour and temper, preparing a good breakfast with home-made bread and a decent cup of tea, and great conversational powers. Wallace is definitely not stingy, he made us nice brownies and offered a nice drink when we came ‘home’ and were almost drown after not really singing in the rain. The Scots must work on that aspect. Wallace has a great love for the Arts and treats his guests as humans.

We strongely recommand this address in Edinborough and know in advance you'll enjoy your visit.

I was delighted to find this lovely rather quirky bed and breakfast in Leith, when I visted Edinburgh to attend a conference. Although on the outskirts of the city, it wasan easy bus ride to the conference venue and Wallace was extremely helpful with advice on bus routes etc. Leith itself is also a quaint and interesting place with a number of tempting looking restaurants a short walk away by the river. My room was comfortable and quiet and the shower warm and very effective. Wallace provides a lovely breakfast whenever you want it (I had to leave pretty early one day) with fresh bread/toast, fresh friut and a variety of cereals. I will certainly return there if I have the opportunity to visit Edinburgh again

My husband and I traveled to Edinburgh at the end of a 5-day automobile tour through Scotland with the Goodwood Racing Club. We decided after spending nights in 5 different hotels (5 and 4 star) and being very disappointed with the service at the 5 star rated facility, that we would research a place to stay in Edinburgh from Sawday's Bed & Breakfast guide. The review for Wallace's was very enticing and described the experience as "memorable". As it turned out it, as is almost always the case with Sawday's, the description of the home and host was 100%. Wallace is delightful and because he has lived and worked in the US and Italy as a fashion designer, he has incorporated his flair, sophistication and attention to detail into everything he does. We look forward to future stays at Wallace's.

Arriving at the grand Exchange buildings, entering a vast echoey hall and climbing several flights of winding stairs created a little trepidation...what had we come to, but behind the door of appartment four we entered into a haven of peace and beauty.Wallace made our stay very special ...a welcoming glass of prosecco and a dreamy room full of light and white, full of delightful touches...the chocolates, the white roses, the cool white dressing gowns, the quirky books, the lovely bed linen and even a happy birthday banner for me! Wallace is friendly without being intrusive. Breakfast was lovely, fresh fruit , yummy bread and preserves. The whole experience was wonderful and I would love to go back ...for me it was exactly what bed and breakfast should be like.
