“Great Location, Lovely Apartment, Wonderfuly warm host”
Reviewed 3 July 2010

Wallace's Arthouse is located in Leith, close to an enormous selection of excellent restaurants and bars, galleries, the docks and views over the Firth of Forth. (Leith is also very easy to get to from the airport and getting into the centre of town is also not a problem). The apartment itself has been modernised beautifully, still retaining its high ceilings and original features. My room was large and quiet and the bed was very comfortable. I have stayed three times now and would stay again based on the location and property alone. But whether it would be quite the same without Wallace, I'm not so sure. His warmth and sincerity mean that when I now visit Edinburgh to see my friends, I include Wallace as one of them! He is an excellent host and I wholeheatedly reccommend the Arthouse.

Staying at Wallace's was a very memorable experience from start to finish. On arrival stepping into his immaculately white flat, which was filled with interesting pieces of art and furniture, we were offered presseco and Wallace had even gone to the effort of presenting a lovely birthday cake for my boyfriends birthday! (he had also booked us into a very nice fish restaurant before we arrived which we had requested.)

The room was unique; bright and clean with artwork and textile pieces dotted around, super comfy bed and a very interesting bathroom installation. Breakfast was a lovely change from the norm, served in his homely modern kitchen, with fresh fruit, all different types of cereals, breads, jams, juices, and some great savory items such as mackerel pate, lentils as well as the best coffee ever!

We both felt the best part of our trip to Edinburgh was having the chance to stay here, it was like staying in a (much more interesting) home away from home. Wallace is a pleasure to talk to and such a helpful and kind gentleman, always on hand to offer tea, coffee, a chat or anything else you may desire.

It was defiantly one of the best places i have had the pleasure to stay at.

We stayed four nights mid week with Wallace and had a lovely time. The apartment, situated on the top floor of the former Assembly Rooms in Leith, was beautifully decorated, with interesting and varied artworks all over. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and stylish.

What made the visit so lovely was Wallace himself who is an effortlessly welcoming and friendly host, with an amazing attention to detail. When one morning, in conversation over breakfast (which was a social affair each day) I mentioned that oddly I don't like croissants but do like almond croissants, the following day Wallace had made a special trip out to get some almond croissants! I was touched at this level of effort to make our stay wonderful.

On several main bus routes into the city centre, with a selection of good cafes, bars and restaurants in the near vicinity, I would highly recommend Wallace's Arthouse to anyone looking for somewhere unique to stay in Edinburgh.

We decided to stay in Leith because of its proximity to the Michelin Mile (3 Michelin Star Restaurants within a mile of each other, as informed by our host, Wallace). After booking lunch and dinner at The Kitchin we were on the hunt for accommodation of the same quality. Booking was simple, we emailed our request directly to Wallace who promptly replied and within moments our nights were booked and confirmed.

After a wonderful lunch we found Wallace's beautiful Arthouse along the Leith Walk, not far from the restaurant, other bars and inviting eateries. We climbed the stairs and followed the voice of our gracious host who welcomed us as if we were long lost friends. It was at that moment we knew we were in for something special.

The Arthouse itself is an eclectic mix of artists work from around the world as well as some quirky and humorous touches added by Wallace himself. The long hallway, which displays most of this, was bathed in a beautiful warm glow and seemed to stretch for miles. Wallace led us to our room, one of 2 rooms available. It was large, bright, perfectly decorated and had a wonderful warm feel to it. The ensuite is innovative and has to be seen to be believed, an amazing addition to the room.

After we were settled Wallace invited us to the sitting room where we relaxed on the couch and shared, not only a bottle of Proseco, but some wonderful conversation. It honestly felt as if we were in the company of an old friend, and now believe we have made one.

Wallace gave us some recommended establishments to enjoy a few drinks before dinner, they also did not disappoint.

After arriving back from dinner we were delighted to find that Wallace had not only prepared the room for our arrival (drawn curtain and turned on lamp) but also left us some chocolates. A very sweet gesture!

Breakfast was a triumph. Not only had we had lunch and dinner at a Michelin Star restaurant but now Wallace had put on a breakfast that even Tom Kitchin would be proud of. The table was heaving with an array of delights and I can assure you that we did not leave hungry! Fresh Scottish Berries, warm breads from the local bakery, a variety of cereals and quality condiments (he even had Vegemite for us Aussies!).

When we are next in Edinburgh there is nowhere we would rather stay. Wallace and his Arthouse were one of the highlights of our holiday. Thank you Wallace.

My daughter and I spent one night at Wallaces Arthouse - we had such a lovely time. Obviously Wallace himself is the biggest attraction however the ambience of the house and the cosy feeling you are surrounded by meant that when we had to eventually leave my daughter did not want to return to our normal life - 'she wanted to stay with Wallace and I could come to visit when I wanted'. My personal hightlights - chippy chips and olive oil and cointreau with vegetable pie - delicious, the company of such a charming and smart man who greeted us with some fizzy when we arrived (juice for my daughter of course) and sleeping like a log in the comfortable beds - I dont think I have slept so goood in years. Go ! I totally recommend Wallaces Arthouse.

We had a really enjoyable stay here. This B&B is a modern apartment inside a 19th century building – very clean and bright and holding Wallace's eclectic collection of art. Our rooms were light, spacious and interestingly furnished and the bathrooms were immaculately clean. The continental-style breakfasts provided a great range of options among cereals, juices, breads and spreads, fruits and excellent coffee as well as good conversation from Wallace himself.

Wallace was a friendly and attentive host, with a great eye for the details that make a difference, such as fresh milk in the bedroom mini-fridge, Turkish Delight and chocolates by the bedside and small arrangements of flowers everywhere. He welcomed us on arrival with a glass of wine and a chat, and made tea for us in the afternoon when we returned from the city. He was also on hand to host an early Sunday morning breakfast for us, which we appreciated. There was a range of restaurants and bars within easy walking distance from Wallace's and he was very happy to advise and help with bookings.

The noise from the street during the night was the only downside to staying here. If you're a light sleeper earplugs might be a good idea.

Thank you so much for your very kind review. I guess being in a city. one can anticipate a bit of street noise but sorry for that ! I am hoping that I shall see you again here and you should remind me to give you the room at the back where Maddy and Lady Govan stayed !!
Love Wallace. xxx

Leith, the ancient trading port of Edinburgh is close to the city's centre, but a world apart. A haven for young discerning professions and tourists, Leith's ancient and modern architecture embeds its history, while its attractions and eating houses offer interest and excellence to the internationally urbane. As a retired internationally renowned designer, Wallace has designed his Art House as an interesting and ecclectic refuge from the pressures of modern life. A most wonderful host, Wallace is sensitive to his guests needs, discretely guiding them to places of interest and managing, somehow, to use his connections to book tables at restaurants others would find full: excellent!
