My partner and I visited Edinburgh for New Year 2012 for three nights and this is where we stayed.

Initially, may I just say that this Guesthouse is NOT in the epicentre of Edinburgh and is about a mile and a half away from the start of anything (e.g. George IV Bridge). If you like a good walk though then this won't pose a problem.

As always, my reviews always begin positively. First off, it is a very friendly place and the host Kenny was very knowledgeable and accommodating. The rooms were clean, including the bathroom, and the beds were big and comfy. Every morning, we were given a small English breakfast which was just enough to start us off for the day. In addition, yogurts, fruit, pastries and other bits and pieces were also available.

Now for the not-so-positives; although I like a nice walk, I felt that this Guesthouse was a little too far away from the epicentre, especially when the weather is cold and damp. My partner and I did save a few quid by walking to and from the City Centre every now and again but because we were doing lots of walking in and around Edinburgh also, we we're easily persuaded to hop on a bus or flag down a taxi quite a bit of the time. Something which does make the location of this Guesthouse a little bit better is the fact that there is a bus stop located just up and across the road, on Mayfield Road.
Also, despite our room being nice and clean, it did tend to get cold. On the first day, I remember arriving at around 1:00pm and upon entering the room, we we're both hit with a chill, which didn't help as the weather outside was very cold and drizzly.

To sum this review up; a clean and friendly Guesthouse on the outskirts of Edinburgh City Centre, which is an ideal place to stay for people who enjoy plenty of walking.

I stayed in the Mayfield Lodge for two days. Nice guest house with big and clean rooms. Kind reception. You can walk to the center of the city if you like (approximately 35-45mins) or take a bus nearby. Very nice neighbourhood in South Edinburgh. Recommended.

On arrival at Mayfield Lodge, the first thing I realised was that the website's description is out of date. It is no longer run by a couple who are "professional chefs" and who speak "Fluent Spanish and German" but a host who manages the guest house for them.

My room was clean, spacious and nicely decorated but the host made my stay a tad uncomfortable. His humour was far too forward to a single woman staying on her own, and I found it distasteful. He was also too intrusive.

The breakfast was cooked well but I went to get a box of cornflakes and realised they were all date July 2011, I stayed in October 2011!

There are a lot of guest houses in the area, so next time I'm in Edinburgh for work I'll check out somewhere else.

I'm surprised by the number of good reviews for this hotel, and I was surprised by what we found when we arrived having looked at the website.

For starters it appears the hotel is no longer run by Klaus and Hala Knust as the website suggests but it is run by Kenny. Kenny was very welcoming but there was a confusion over the three double rooms that were booked turned into a double, a family and a single. Kenny claims he expressly stated this to my mother-in-law when booking but I doubt she would have booked for three couples as such. So my wife had to share with her parents and I had to take the single room.

Equally when we asked what time breakfast was Kenny asked us what time we would like it, as we had a wedding in the afternoon we chanced our hand at a 10am breakfast, only to be told that breakfast was between 8.30 and 9am. Quite why he thought to ask us given the narrow window I don't know?

And so onto the single room. The room looked as though it may have been Kenny's with left items of clothing stored in the cupboard and no lock on the door. Correction, the door could not be locked from the outside, but it could be locked from the inside. Kenny assured me no one would get past him but personally I'd rather just have a key.
Here again the website is misleading by stating that all rooms are en-suite. This is not the case as the single I was in and the double next to it (occupied by others) shared a bathroom. The bathroom came well equipped with what appeared to be all the left over toiletries with numerous bottles of everything, an electric toothbrush, a pile of towels and some prescription anti-inflamatories for good measure. The room was apparently more luxurious than the others as it had a blu-ray player, but that wasn't of interest to me when in a city like Edinburgh.

The other rooms were well decorated and clean although both en-suite showers were small and cramped.

At least, I thought, I was getting a breakfast out of it, albeit a very tightly prescribed team. Ah, well apart from the fact the catering hygiene certificate was made out to the elusive Klaus Kunst, the breakfast was poor. There was no choice available, or offered, six cooked breakfasts arrived without promping. Again to the website description, it was definitely not 'Superb'. The bacon was good, as was the single button mushroom, the spoonful of beans less so and the sausage were of the grey frozen variety that I try not to think about.

So all in all not a great experience, although an amusing one to recount, I wouldn't recommend it but if you're staying in one of the en-suite doubles then perhaps it's OK value but don't expect too much.

Me and my partner have just returned from a weekend stay here as we were at Hogmany.
It was great from start to finish! Our host Kenny was a lovely lovely guy, too happy to help you out with anything. He even gave us his mobile number so we wouldnt have to walk downstairs if we needed him!
The room was really decent sized with a good bathroom too. Comfy bed with extra pillows if needed, a hairdryer, TV and tea and coffee facilities.
Breakfast was great, once again, Kenny couldnt do enough for us.
We were a fair walk from the city centre, maybe 30mins. But it was cheap as chips in a taxi (unfortuntly we had to pay double because of NY!)
Edinburgh itself was amazing. Didnt know what to expect but it by far excelled!
All in all, we were sad to leave Edinburgh and sad to leave Mayfield Lodge! Will definately be returning.

I visited Edinburgh for academic reasons, The lodge had an excellent location because I could walk to the University on one direction and to restaurants and Pubs to the other. You can even walk to the city center if you don't mind the workout. The lodge was sparkling clean, the morning breakfast will keep you well until dinner. Kenny, the host, was very nice and helpful. Although my room was very tiny, it was clean and had a complete bathroom. Wireless internet was OK, it did not work sometimes. But there was a computer in the dinning room that you can use. The TV in the room had very limited available channels, but I did not travel so many miles to watch TV. Overall I feel it was a great deal for the extra care that Kenny gives to the place and to the hosts. If I have the opportunity to visit the city again, I will certainly keep the lodge as my first option.
