“Fabulous family celebration weekend!”
Reviewed 21 May 2012

We have just returned from a weekend in Edinburgh to celebrate two big family milestone birthdays (one 85 and one 90 year old!). The Apex Waterloo Place was great from start to finish, lovely building, beautiful rooms, great food. We ate in the (small and can be noisy) bar on the Friday evening, and had dinner in the restaurant, where the staff arranged a private area for us (as there were 10 in our party) for the Saturday night. Food on both occasions was well prepared and presented beautifully, staff are attentive without being intrusive, and were very kind with our elderly guests.

The rooms were all reasonably sized, well presented and extremely clean and tidy. A late check out was easily arranged for the older members of the party. Some of us used the pool and gym - they are both small but a nice addition to the hotel. There is no quiet sitting areas in the hotel however, with several hen parties present the bar can get noisy.

Breakfast was hot and freshly cooked, with a good selection of cold food. Location is really great - a 5 minute walk to the station and the same to the shops of Princes St. Calton Hill is just a short stroll away and makes a lovely walk in good weather for great views of Edinburgh.

We didn't meet a single member of staff who was not polite and helpful in every way - we wish all hotels were like this! We have stayed in five star hotels which have been much less impressive, and we will return.

This hotel was a delight in all ways - beautiful old exterior, very modern interior, great location, special 'extra' touches in very well appointed and very clean rooms and extremely helpful staff.

My husband and I stayed at here for a weekend in March. A beautiful hotel, immaculately clean with great service. Location was fab as you are a stones throw from prince's street. Leisure club was, as the rest of hotel, nicely designed and quite unique. I found this hotel quite different to others in terms of contemporary in an old building with some clever touches including the cocktails with a Scottish twist. In addition the customer service was great and very sincere. I particularly found the spa relaxing with all you need available and you could enjoy the place without lots of leisure club staff hanging about - very different. I left with my complimentary 'apex duck' vowing we would definitely return.

The hotel is in good location and service is generally satisfactory. I particularly like the room - of good space. While I don't think it is anywhere closer to five stars, it remains a good choice for a budget business trip.

We have stayed in many different hotels in Edinburgh over the years but this was truly exceptional. It was a special family occasion so there were six of and we had three rooms booked. All were perfect. Great position. Lovely old exterior but beautifully modernised interior. Friendly and efficient staff with Lady concierge making you feel welcome. Bar area spacious yet cosy for drinks before dinner. We did not dine in the hotel as other arrangements had been made but the menu looked great. We had a deluxe room which was well worth extra. Good bathroom with large shower and bath. Rooms are modern and well kitted out. Minor point but we thought pillows were not too comfy. Breakfast is served in a modern bright dining room with continental and then a good selection menu cooked to order which is so pleasant these day rather than the usual pickings under the heat lamps !
Our three day stay was brilliant. When we arrived our rooms were not ready. Not particuarly a big issue although it had been wet and it would have been nice to get in and get dried off. However without question we were politely ushered into the bar and provided with a round of complimentary drinks.
I do not often rave about hotels but the staff here know how to look after people quietly and efficiently. We will return and would definitely recommend this Hotel.
Thank you Apex Hotels for making my 60th Birthday such a grand weekend.

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms have a bath.

Stayed here with my girlfriend on a long-weekend, very happy with the selection. The location is great, in New Town at the end of Princess Street. Quiet, but still only a short walk to pubs and shopping. And even better, just next to the most beautiful green area in Edinburgh, Calton Hill. Perfect for views, history and also for running :-)

Friendly and professional service, but the reception is not that appealing for a design hotel. A bit too cold and business like. Great room (716), with large bed and good bathroom. No rain shower, but good with separate shower and bath tub.

Continental breakfast was limited but good. Not a big selection of bread, no fresh juice but good cheese selection, meat and jam on the table.

Spa with sauna and steam room, good gym with Technogym equipment. Very good massage selection. An added bonus for the hotel.

Very good, modern hotel. Still a few levels to go of course, but fabolous value!

Spent 3 nights in this hotel last week. My husband chose it from the internet and we were very pleased with it. It is very convenient for Waverley Station and the bus stops for the Airport Link buses and not really that far from anything.

The check in and check out were both very efficient and on each occasion that we needed the reception to do something for us, it was dealt with very quickly.

Even the basic rooms are a decent size, especially compared to standard rooms in London. The beds were comfortable and we were not disturbed by outside noise or other guests. The room also had 2 comfortable chairs and enough room on the desk/dressing table for 2 to eat at. We needed to have room service breakfast on the Saturday morning due to an early flight. Everything that was ordered arrived and bang on time and the hot items were hot.

We used the bar on the 1st night only and whilst the service was very good, we decided to use the bars at the restaurants we were eating at on the following evenings. I'm not sure about some of the furniture, namely the bed!!

Breakfast on the 2 mornings we had it in the restaurant was very good with plenty of choice. We had the full Scottish breakfast the 1st day and it was a really satisfying plate full. On the 2nd day we decided to have something different and my husband chose the Eggs Benedict and I had the Omlette Arnold Bennet and again these were excellent.

There is a gym with treadmills, cross trainer, bikes, weights not large but I would think never overly full. My husband used the swimming pool twice at around 4.30 pm and again there was no problem with numbers and I had a massage and facial in the Spa which was excellent.

If we go to Edinburgh again, which I think would be likely (if only it hadn't rained) we will stay at this hotel again and I would recommend it to friends if asked. I am also considering trying one of the Apex Hotels in London for my next trip there but that won't be until after the Olympics are over and done with.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room away from noisy items/vents etc and were given one.
