“Nice place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2012

No duck, but they said they are rebranding everything right now, even the ducks.

Pros: clean, practical, great location. Room service was quick and tasted good. Bathroom was lovely and very nice toiletries. The TV was _huge_ and lots of good channels to pick from.

Cons: 4th floor room had a view of a crammed airwell. You have to drag luggage up several steps to get to the elevator. Seeing as next to that they put in a fancy contraption for wheelchairs, why didn't they just put in a ramp? When we bell-checked out luggage the day we checked out, even the concierge had trouble thumping our suitcases down the stairs. Just an odd way to do things.

Overall, we'd stay there again with lighter luggage and insisting on a room on a floor higher than reception (which is already at floor 5, being the hotel slopes downhill).

Room Tip: Get floor 6 or higher!

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and found it perfect in every way.
We flew to Edinburgh and got a bus from the airport which stopped at Waverley Station, a five minute walk from the hotel. The room was excellent. Lovely massive bed with large TV facing it. Bath and separate shower, ample storage space, ironing board and iron, free safe and small fridge.
There was a good gym for free use, lovely pool, a sauna and steam room and a spa area (didnt find time to try this!).
Breakfast was included in our accomodation, which was a great advantage as it was exquisite. There are a choice of hot and cold foods, plenty of drinks, but at £15 per head rather expensive if needing to pay.
The location was great too, as it is a five minute walk from the train station, city touring buses, Princes St (for shopping).
All in all I loved the hotel and the city, and when I return this will be my place to stay again.

This is the perfect hotel. Right next to the train station, it means you don't have to haul your bags up the mountain to get to a hotel by the castle. The property itself is very clean and modernized, the staff are helpful, and the bar serves decent and reasonably priced food.

My wife and I stayed here back at the end of May 2012 and found it good, but not excellent nor luxurious. It is a VERY close walk to the train station, which is a plus - very manageable, even with luggage. We stayed here our first two nights while in Edinburgh before heading north and then again on our last night before taking the train back to London. The staff were very nice and helpful and the rooms are clean. Just make sure to stay away from the rooms on the lower floors and in the back of the hotel, as they back up to the loading/trash docks of the hotel and they are busy very early in the morning. Not to mention all the street noise you get from the "party-people" throughout the night. Before we left, we requested a higher floor upon our return for the final night and it was much better. When we make a return visit to Edinburgh, I would have no problem staying here again. Also, easy 15-20 minute walk to Royal Mile.

Room Tip: Request rooms above the ground floor, as they do have "basement" level rooms since the hot...

The Waterloo Hotel was completed in about 1818 and once hosted Charles Dickens. Today it has been completely modernized within its historic Georgian shell. It is located close to the central train station (1 block if you take the correct entrance or 2 blocks if you don't). If you are a fast walker, it is within 15 minutes of the Edinburgh Castle. In brief, most everything in Edinburgh central is close to this hotel.

We booked online and were upgraded to a premium room, so we are not certain about the standard rooms. The room we had on the eighth floor (#827) facing Waterloo Place was cavernous (Note: the main entrance is on the fifth floor as the hotel descends down a hill at the back). Our room had all the modern conveniences and the bathroom contained both a large shower and bath. The espresso coffee maker was a nice touch. WIFI was free and stable.

The restaurant was good and we had a decent (although not spectacular) meal there the first night. The included breakfast was a typical mixture of cold buffet and a selection of hot items from a menu. Other than the Eggs Benedict needing some improvement, everything else was fine. The lounge bar was like a fine old cosy living (drawing) room where we had our coffee and tea.

In summary, a great location that is close to everything, but still quiet. It is excellent value in comparison to other hotels such as other 4 star properties, such as the Balmoral or Scotsman. A great place for a weekend getaway. Please note there are at least 3 other Apex hotel properties in Edinburgh, which might be confusing when booking or trying to find the correct hotel.

A fantastic stay at the Apex. Stayed 4 nights in September 2012, on the 9th floor. The view was just of an adjacent wing, nothing exciting. The room facilities itself were excellent, as were the room "freebies" i.e. coffee, tea, biscuits, toiletries, etc.... During our stay we had 2 minor problems with the room which were fixed within 10 minutes of making the phone call to reception. Staff were always friendly, happy to help and responded to anything we asked of them quickly. The staff were also happy to have our luggage left with them whilst we went on a day out after check-out.

I used the gym on a few occasions, good facility! The swimming pool, steam room, sauna and changing rooms were all top-notch. I can't say how good the restaurant was as we didn't eat there.

The location is great, at the end of Princes Street, meaning old and new town are easily accessible by foot, as is the Omniplex and Leith.

Overall I'd thoroughly recommend the hotel, and will definately be staying there again if we go back to Edinburgh!

Room Tip: I'd ask for a higher up room as I noticed those on the 3rd floor (where the gym is) had a lot of...

Service was very good apart from missing a few bits when the room was serviced otherwise it would have been excellent. Location is good in easy reach of most of Edinburgh, we didn't eat in so can't comment in the restaurant. The only downside was that the rooms are ok but nothing special and not much of a view, but we would go back.
