“Great start to our trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2014

This hotel was fantastic!

GREAT location, very clean, fantastic swimming pool, helpful staff, very good breakfasts, and a very fair price!

Our stay here was a fantastic start to a 3-week trip through Europe. If I ever visit Edinburgh again, I will definitely consider staying at this hotel.

This was a Christmas present as a theatre package. Couldn't fault it in any way. Check in and reception staff and concierge very helpful and professional. Used the restaurant and food was very to my liking. Taste and presentation excellent. Lovely little appetiser given along with bread to start off. Very nice.Portions ideal for me but may be a bit on the small side for someone with a big appetite. Price of pre theatre menu very good and gives guillianos across from playhouse a good run for it's money!. Restaurant staff very polite, helpful and friendly. Breakfast was delicious, service was good and efficient. Room was lovely and spacious. We had upgraded to superior room for £10 which was a bargain. Lovely big beds, bathroom with large bath and shower and plentiful hot water and products. Lovely big mirrors in bathroom and bedroom and plenty of storage space. I loved the fact that it was ordinary hangers and not those ones that are fixed on the rail. Hope people respect this and don't nick them!! Great tea and coffee in the room including filter coffee. More available at reception. Lovely biscuits and snacks and water included. Didn't use spa so cannot comment on this. We were on the 8th floor with views out the front. Easy access to all amenities in Edinburgh. Would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Higher floor appears to be better. Ask if upgrades available as it was very reasonable

From the moment we arrived we loved everything about this hotel. Check in was efficient, friendly and made us feel very welcome. We were able to check into our room early and were really pleased with our choice. We had a deluxe room on floor 10 which was large, very quiet and extremely comfortable. The large bathroom had a walk in shower and a big bath, the ceiling had a skylight in so you could look up and see the stars ( shame it rained so much! ) enormous tv, coffee machine and plentiful snacks. It was spotless, comfortable with floor to ceiling windows with a view across the city to the estuary.
We spent time in the spa, and both had a treatment and all facilities were of a very high standard.
Breakfast was plentiful and consisted of a really great choice of hot and cold food, the eggs florentine was delicious! As others have said it can be very busy at peak times and service can be sporadic at this time but if you miss the rush service is very good. Every member of staff we spoke to was kind, friendly and keen to help. There was no pressure to check out early I definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again without a doubt.

Room Tip: We were I room 1001 which was excellent. Top floor.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Waverley train station, and where the Airport bus drops you, (walk up to Princes Street, turn right and keep walking).

Check in was quick and efficient and my luggage was whisked away to my room.

My room was large, light and airy and the bathroom was huge too, complete with a deep bath. I had a "city room view" which was the back of other buildings, so was in fact a city view.

The bed was enormous and very comfortable, complete with plenty of pillows.

The air conditioning / heating was very effective and was not noisy as in some hotels.

I used both the restaurant and room service. In the restaurant the waiting staff were attentive and the food was presented beautifully, and tasted good too. I was a bit disappointed with the presentation of the room service dinner (the salmon, was supposed to be presented with mixed leaf salad, but only had some sort of curly leaf lettuce and looked bland and boring). Also my second room service breakfast came with no salt and pepper, but the breakfast, on both days, complete with haggis was delicious.

The hotel is at the bottom of Carlton Hill and is close to Holyrood Palace and Arthur's seat (a fabulous walk with breathtaking views). I asked for directions at Reception and was given a map and was talked through the directions, the receptionist even wrote largely on the map as I did not have my reading glasses (very helpful).

I have stayed in Edinburgh many times, but will recommend and return to this hotel should I be in the City again. Excellent location, and very helpful, attentive staff.

This was my second visit to this hotel and my overriding memory from last time was the wonderful staff, everyone of whom goes above and beyond what's called of then.
This time I opted to go for the Duplex Suite and was delighted with the room which has 2 levels with a bathroom bigger than many hotel rooms.
Absolutely no complaints or niggles and I'll certainly be back again.

Decided to spend New Year in Edinburgh and booked into the Apex in Waterloo Place for four nights. Like all Edinburgh hotels the prices were inflated for the new year period but I suppose they have to make it when they can. It worked out at £215 a night for the first three nights without breakfast. A fourth night added on was £120, qite a difference and we were offered and accepted a special deal of dinner on the fourth night for £15 per person which was an excellent deal. The location, especially for New Year could not have been better in Waterloo Place, which is really a continuation of Princes Street. Car parking available in a car park just round the corner with a 15% discount for hotel guests. Check in was fine with pleasant friendly staff. We had a room on floor 8 with a view over the back towards Leith Walk. Room was very nice and well equipped. Large TV with plenty of choice. Free WiFi. Fridge, safe, Iron and board. Good wardrobe hanging space. Excellent and quiet aircon. Would have liked a trouser press. Very good bathroom with a sizeable bath and a separate big effective shower. A very good well fitted out room. Tried the spa and enjoyed it after a few days of overeating and drinking too much. Nice pool with a sauna and steam room. Did not try any of the treatments which were available. Had dinner in the hotel on one night in Elliot's Restaurant. Nice atmosphere. Lighting just right. Staff friendly and attentive. The food was very, very good. Tasty and beautifully presented. Would certainly eat there again. Check out was fine, quick friendly and efficient. If you are staying in the city of Edinburgh and want a hotel in the centre of things then this would be a very good choice especially at the more reasonable room rates now on offer.

Room Tip: Upper floors quieter with the possibility of a view.
