“Great Location”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

Apex Waterloo is a great location. It's an easy walk from the train station, so even if you have luggage - trust me, you can make it. Just exit (up the escalators) to Princes Street/Waterloo Street and you are about 2 blocks. It was in perfect proximity to the castle, the National Monument, Queen Street, etc.

We were upgraded to the Master Suite which was very nice. The bedroom was very dark and quiet (my bliss), the living room was cozy with a beautiful few of the National Monument of Scotland.

The staff were all very pleasant and helpful when needed.

We booked this hotel based on its location and reviews and we're not disappointed. The room we booked was a deluxe, the room and amenities had a luxurious feel and really added to the stay.

The staff at check in we're very friendly and attentive.

The hotel is located at the East end of Princes street very close to he Omni centre. It is very easy walking distance to Princes street and all the shopping / restaurants etc..

Would definitely stay here again and hopefully will soon.

Room Tip: A deluxe room was nice and large with great amenities.

The hotel was very convenient to the train station where my wife and I arrived from London; about a 2 block walk, and also convenient to old town and new town shopping areas. We had notified the hotel in advance that we would be checking in late and got an email confirmation which put me at ease before we even left home. Upon arrival, the desk clerk checked us in and told us we were being upgraded, at no cost, to a higher class of room than what we had booked. The hotel was quite clean, modern, and efficient with proximity locks on the door that you only had to touch instead of guessing which end and side of the card key to insert. The room was spacious by European standards with a large tub and shower in the bathroom. Two unexpectedly nice features were windows that actually opened to let in fresh air and a non-fog area on the bathroom mirror over the sink. There was also plenty of storage for hanging and folded clothes although we could have used another luggage rack on which to perch a suitcase. We had a nice meal in the hotel restaurant the first night but otherwise did not eat there. We also took advantage of the hotel's concierge, Linda, and found her advice about local attractions was spot-on. At her suggestion, we hiked down the back side of Arthur's Seat after reaching the top and enjoying the view. At the bottom of the other side of the hill was a nice little village with a great pub, possibly the oldest in Scotland. After a nice meal and a great beer we were able to catch a bus (directions also provided by Linda) back to the area of the hotel. When we were ready to leave it was only about 3 blocks walk to catch an airport express bus for the next leg of our trip. We would definitely recommend this hotel to any visitors to Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Entrance and front desk is on the 5th floor because the hotel is built on a hill. Ask for a room ab...

Only a 1-night stay, so my experience may not be a true reflection. This is a much "newer" than its Grassmarket sister hotel. It is well located for shopping, Waverly Station (6 minute walk with luggage), and Calton Hill.

Check in welcome was neither friendly nor unfriendly.

My room was average European sizes, but well and comfortably appointed. Comfortable bed. Bathroom average size, but good shower and towels.

Bar/lounge very busy, but staff snobby and inattentive (at least to me - could it have been my hiking clothes - well-dressed orientals seems to get service.) My attempts to get attention were ignored and after 20 minutes I left and went elsewhere..

Me & my girlfriend stayed here for a short 2 night stay in Edinburgh, it's an excellent location not too far from anywhere. The royal mile is just over the bridge and new town and shopping is within easy access down princes street. Most of the city attractions and sights are very close making this an excellent choice for exploring Edinburgh.

The Hotel is also about 5-10 minutes walk from the Air Bus drop off point.

The Hotel is clean and staff are friendly, polite and helpful as you might expect from a four star hotel.

The bed is extremely comfy, you'll know what i mean when you sink into it, this is exactly as it should be. the bed is the most important thing of a hotel and they have got it right here.

Room Tip: The Hotel has 10 floors and the reception at street level (Princess Street) is on the 5th floor. We...

Fantastic hotel with staff that go the extra mile - nothing is too much trouble for them and after telling them we had had to switch the date of our bookings and subsequently had to pay slightly more they offered us complementary breakfast which was lovely. The beds were very comfy and the rooms were particularly spacious with stylish and modern finishings.

We stayed two nights in a deluxe double on the top floor. Room was spacious and nicely furnished. Picture window the length of one wall with view towards Leith. Lovely view but even on 10th floor there was a lot of outside noise on the Saturday night.

Location was excellent two minutes from Waverley station and 20 seconds from Princes Street.

Staff at reception were all extremely helpful, welcoming and polite.

We ordered room service, they said it would be 20 minutes and arrived in 10.

Pool was nice, the size wasn't too bad for a city hotel but the design limited the amount of space available for people who wanted to swim lengths, so if there were two people in there swimming up and down there wasn't much room left for anyone else to do very much.

All in all difficult to fault - so why 4 stars not 5. Two reasons the noise from the window (as mentioned above) and a feeling that we were lucky with our room because it was on the top floor of the hotel. As other reviewers have mentioned reception is on 5th floor, some rooms are kind of underground or look into other buildings close by. Having seen the hotel layout my perception is that a large number of rooms would be dark / underground / overlooked and so I am not sure I would risk going again in case I wasn't so lucky with the room given next time.

Room Tip: Highest floor possible, view from front of hotel rather than rear.
