“Great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

My wife, daughter and I spent two nights here, took the train from Liverpool. Website directions to the hotel were ok, found out later that just 100 yards from the train station, there was an entrance to the hotel elevator, we walked up the hill to check in, just have to look for it. Room was great, at the front of the hotel, almost had a view of the castle. Close to all shopping and restaurants, just a 15 minute walk to Edinburgh castle.

Dear Mark B

Thanks for taking the time to post your review.

It sounds like our location suited your family and that you were able to get out and about to enjoy Edinburgh. The lower level entrance is ideal for access to Waverley Station but is a little hidden, great when you know it's there though!

Warmest regards

This hotel was in a fabulous location , just a few minutes walk from Princes Street ,sharing a luxury room with my two sisters, to have a wonderful girls night ,in April this year. Staff were extremely helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed the use of the pool facilities as well as consuming a large Scottish breakfast. We were delighted with the ambiance of this modern hotel in such a traditional part of the city and would certainly recommend highly.

Great location in Edinburgh, a short walk to the attractions in old and new town. Large, beautiful rooms and great modern bathrooms. The bed was amazingly comfortable. This hotel also has a very cool pool, which I unfortunately did not get a chance to use. The decor is modern and very posh. The restaurant served a nice breakfast, the cappucinos were great! I stayed in room 735 and would stay again.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in rooms on the 7th floor or above

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend in May.

On the positive side, the room was comfortable, the bathroom was very nice and the Elemis toiletries were a nice touch.

However, we were on the 2nd floor and had a view of a maintenance area and the many cigarette butts that people on higher floors must have dropped from their windows. There wasn't much natural light which gave the room a gloomy feel and I couldn't help but feel that we were missing out on a better room. Also, bathrobes were not provided in the room so I didn't use the spa.

Despite the downsides with our room, we have already booked a return December visit because the location of the hotel is excellent. It is only a 5 minute walk to the train station and the airport bus stop so I think the hotel offers reasonable value for money. Just hoping for a better room next time....

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a decent view.

This hotel does not disappoint. The staff are friendly and efficient, the accommodation is first class and the facilitates are excellent. The hotel room was large and fully stocked with everything you could imagine. It had a full size bath, I am a tall person and I could easily stretch out in it. The shower was huge too. All modern fixtures. The spa and leisure facilities are good, the pool is fine if a little small but has a whirlpool at one side so that makes up for it. Would definitely come again and stay. It is a 5 min walk from the station just be aware that the entrance on the he ground floor is poorly signed and if you don't pay attention you could miss it!

It was our first visit to Edinburgh for 30 years, and we tried to select our hotel with care. At over £200 a night (incl breakfast) it wasn't cheap, but we decided to push the boat out a little for a special weekend. We drove 200 miles and arrived around 1pm, too early to access our room. The receptionist promised to text us when the room was available, but didn't. However, they relieved us of our bag, and it was in the room later when we returned. We had requested a room with a view, and got it. It was on the top floor and at the rear. We could see over the rooftops to Leith, the Firth of Forth and the Kingdom of Fife beyond. Unfortunately, the main road to Leith was below and the traffic noise continued most of the night, with regular emergency vehicles (sirens blaring, probably police), and noisy late-night revellers. We had originally hoped to open the windows, but they were locked. The room itself was comfortable, if a little "style over substance". The restaurant was ok, although we could not get a meal on the Saturday evening as the hotel had booked a private party which was very annoying. We spoke to the Assistant Manager who offered us bar snacks, but the bar was full with lots of people waiting for service. Anyway, we hadn't come all this way and spent all this money just to have a bar snack on the Saturday evening. The location of the hotel is very good for access to the city centre, Royal Mile, etc. There are lots of hotels in the centre of Edinburgh and we felt that we could have done better.

Room Tip: There is traffic noise at the rear, so the front may be quieter.

Dear Wayla2013,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay with us and for providing us with such valuable feedback.

I would like to apologise that on this occasion your stay did not live up to your expectations, primarily due to your being unable to dine in the hotel restaurant over the weekend. We did have a large pre booked group dinner in the restaurant on Saturday evening of which all the guests in this group were staying in the hotel. Unfortunately this does mean that availability was limited for other residents and for this we can only apologise. The restaurant can get very busy at weekends and we would always advise guests to book in advance in order to avoid disappointment.

We offer a wide range of bar meals in Elliots Bar including Steak and Club Sandwiches, Burgers, Fish dishes and a variety of salad dishes and it is unfortunate that this area of the hotel was also busy at the time you were looking to dine. Your feedback has been shared with the Management Team and we will be taking this opportunity to make improvements where required. We welcome all comments regarding our services, whether good or bad, as this is the only way we can ensure we offer our guests the service they expect and deserve.

On a positive note we are pleased to see that your request for a room with a view was honoured and that you found the location of the hotel to be very good for access to City Centre attractions.

We do hope that you will consider giving us another chance by staying with Apex Hotels again in the future.

Kindest regards

Behind the stone Victorian facade of the building lies a modern and very comfortable hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff, nice quiet rooms, excellent and free WIFI and a great location near the top of Princes St and the central railway station.

My only criticism is breakfast not starting until 7 am leading to overcrowding at that time. It is light in Edinburgh at 4 am this time of year and people are therefore up early - and want breakfast early.
