“Great Find - Great Location”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

After looking at lots of hotels in Edinburgh I finally settled on Waterloo Place for a suprise trip for my partners birthday. We were definitely not disappointed with our stay.

The reception team were really helpful and had even put chocolates and free drink vouchers in the room for my partners birthday which was a lovely gesture. The room was spacious and very well looked after, the bathroom was bigger than expected too and had fab Elemis toiletries too which were replenished daily.

It was great to have a pool, steam room and sauna on site. The pool is small but it's nice to have and the area around the pool is nice with chairs and loungers to relax in.

The bar and restaurant are nice and modern like the rest of the hotel and the food we had was lovely.

The location was good, close to the center of town and near restaurants. The hotel staff was not very friendly or helpful. Our room was a decent size but the furnishings need some updating. I am not sure I would stay there again.

2 minutes walk from Waverley Station so ideal location. Warm greeting on arrival and check in prompt. Our superior double room was at the back of the hotel as we had requested high floor, quiet room (907). Okay you looked sideways on to John Lewis's store and roof tops but you could see the sea in the distance and beyond as the weather was fantastic and it was very quiet, no street noise (we stayed 2 nights on a bed and breakfast basis with a 3 course meal on the first night). The room was very clean and I loved the Elemis products.

Dinner on the first night in Elliot's restuarant was very good and excellent value @ £18 and If you don't do this offer of 3 courses per person at the time of booking the hotel room you can always ask for the pre-theatre menu. The choice may be limited but for a few more pounds you can go a la carte.

Ideal location for everything from sight seeing to shopping and restaurants.

Breakfast on the first morning was okay however this morning was absolute manic as it would appear a large American contingent were all taking breakfast at the same time! I felt sorry for the staff who had enough to deal with by taking everyone's order without the American's swopping seats. If anything had run out the staff were happy to replenish and also deal with certain cooked meal requests.

Check out efficient however a little concerned they wanted to charge us for drinks we had not had! As everything was paid up front and cash for other items I cannot see how this happened? (Just one small gripe).

Room Tip: Ask for high floor and at the back of the hotel if you want a good nights sleep

It sounds like you enjoyed your time in Edinburgh and that you found our location handy for local attractions and sightseeing.

This is a lovely hotel in a great location. The quality of the linens, pillows, and towels all very nice. The buffet breakfast was excellent: fast friendly service with a large cold buffet of fruits, cereals and breads, plus several, hit cooked to order items available. So why the disappointment? Our room assignment was in a lower level (one floor below street level reception) handicapped room. The huge open shower with no door was unpleasant. The flooring switched from tile to faux wood to carpet. There was one window that looked out at industrial pipes and the side of a building. Because we were "underground" even with every light turned on the room was very dark. I appreciate that a hotel must and should have accommodations for wheel chair bound persons. However, when paying over 200 dollars per night for a room billed as a luxury hotel, I feel the hotel should provide a room that doesn't have the handicap limitations. Nor should should you be placed in a dark cellar type room without some rate adjustment.
I noted that the hotel appeared to cater to large buses/groups based on signage in the lobby and the huge piles of luggage. One would assume that these large groups get discounts on their rooms. The hotel might be advised to assign their poor quality rooms based on the amount each guest paid for their room.

We found this hotel on the Orbitz web site and booked through them. We wondered whether we were being penalized for not booking directly with the hotel? I assume that orbitz and all the other similar companies get some percentage for finding the hotel guests. I am sure Apex would rather not pay these fees. However, these types of companies summarize (in like fashion) all the hotel choices available, and should be compensated. I hope Apex in the future will provide the advertised nice rooms and if they are not available immediately apologize and offer a discount for the inferior rooms.

Dear Kathryn M,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay with us at Apex Waterloo Place Hotel and for providing us with such valuable feedback.

We would like to apologise that on this occasion your stay did not live up to your expectations, primarily due to your disappointment with regards to your allocated bedroom being an adapted room type on a lower floor of the Hotel.

We do have a somewhat unconventional layout with Reception, Elliots Bar and Restaurant being situated on the 5th floor (Main door entrance from Waterloo Place) Whilst our lower floor bedrooms are underneath the main entrance and amenities of the Hotel we would like to clarify these bedrooms are not built underground and are on lower floors due to the Hotel being built on a hill.

We would always urge our guests to speak to our Guest Services Team during their stay in order that we may rectify any issues as soon as possible and prior to departure. We never want any guest to leave feeling disappointed and we are very sorry that we were unaware of your disappointment and therefore unable to offer you an alternative room for the duration of your stay. We would never penalise our guests for booking through a third party agent and we are sorry that you felt this way.

On a positive note we were pleased to see that you found the location of the hotel to be great and enjoyed your bedroom furnishings along with breakfast.

We do hope that despite your initial disappointment you will consider giving us a chance to redeem ourselves by staying with Apex Hotels again in the future. Should you wish to discuss your feedback further please do not hesitate to contact me via the hotel on telephone number: 0131 523 1819 or via email natalie.watts@apexhotels.co.uk.

The hotel was great and had an excellent spa. The bar and restaurant were just average and overpriced. It is convenient to the train station and local tour buses stop in the block. There are several handy cafes and shops nearby. Staff was excellent at reception but food and bar service was poor. House keeping was slow making up our room after 3 pm every day. The location is great. Views even on top floor were not much. Would stay here again.

Would thoroughly recommend, didn't use the lea sure facilities or spa but it's all there if you want it. Just wished we had stayed longer, the concierge was so helpful. It's a must and a short walk from the station

I stayed here in December with my partner for a romantic break. We parked in the Q park which is 2 minutes away and you also get a discount when you get your ticket validated by the hotel.

I've been a fan of Apex since my first stay there in London and this definitely didn't disappoint.

The hotel is located on the GOOD end of Princess Street and is very close to the Royal Mile and almost opposite the train station.

The rooms were very spacious and the building itself was gorgeous.

The staff within the hotel couldn't have been any more helpful.

Breakfast included was, without a doubt, tasty!
