“Pretty good if lacking in soul.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2010

Stayed 3 nights. Top floor room good for staying above sound of bagpipes. Room decent enough. Beds comfortable. Staff a little chaotic, but friendly. Good location. Parking at local NCP cost £16 a day. Restaurant actually quite good and not expensive.

The hotel is in ideal location at the end of Princes Street and less than mins from Waverly station where an airlink bus leaves every ten mins for airport. Close to all the shops on the main street and the Playhouse Theatre. Rooms were very well furnished and spotlessly clean. Staff helpful and pleasant, when we arrived at 9pm our room was not ready which was unusual for late check in but we did get complimentary drink at bar. Breakfast was expensive at £10 - a nicer breakfast could be got in the bistro a few doors down. Over all we had a very enjoyable stay at the hotel my only complaint is we paid double the price for the room on the first night €200 for the wednesday night and €100 for the thursday night. We orignally had booked one night but due to flight changes we needed to book an extra night and paid double.

This hotel was indeally situated not ten minutes away from Waverly Train Station. Within easy walking distance of all major areas and attractions. (instead of walking up the hundreds of steps from the station, you can go the back way to the hotel as another reviewer has stated..MUCH easier!)

The hotel is bright, modern and clean. The staff helpful and pleasant. When we arrived, our room wasn't ready, so we went for a coffee in the bar area. The receptionist gave us a complimentary drink voucher for the inconvenience!

The room was big and airy and decorated in a modern, stylish way. Huge TV, sofa, big bathroom with bath and wet room type shower (even a rubber duck!) Our room was at the rear of the hotel, so no view, just 2 small high up windows. Not an issue for us as the room was to sleep and relax in.
Only real issue with the room was the warmth, it got a little stuffy at night, and the air con was a bit noisy.

We didnt have breakfast, at £10 per person per day extra, we decided not to, but there was a great Italian cafe at the end of the road that did breakfasts. Nor did we eat in the restaurant.
We did get free use of the Hotel pool, gym and sauna..well..I didn't! but looked at it and it was very nice!

All in all, it was a great base to explore the city. (turn left as you leave the front entrance and follow the street to a lovely park and interesting graveyard!) Comfy and relaxing at a good price. I would reccomend!

A great hotel - fantastic convenient location in a great city. about 30 seconds walk from the train station, with really helpfull staff. When we arrived, our room was not ready, but we were given a complimentary round of coffee and cake to occupy us till it was

When in the large well equipped room, we had all the facilities you would expect, but the room was a little bit dark, due to the odd layout off the building. This was made up for with good lighting and clever decor. there was also a large TV, with a much wider selection of channels than standard.

The Gym was ok - mainly cardio, but not great for resistance training. the pool was an unexpected treat (as it wasn't listen when we booked) and doing laps was a good start to the day

only two disadvantages - when booking, we couldn't book breakfast, and when we arrived we were given the opportunity to add breakfast to our bill - but £10 per person per morning seemed unreasonable for people like us, who in essence usualy only have a cup of tea and some cornflakes! - but, we wish we had, as we found the cafe's arround the hotel fairly limited for breakfasts!

The other disadvantage was, when we woke up on the first morning, i was sneezing very badly. this continued on the second morning. we eventually tracked this down to the real feather bedding - a nice luxury, but i ended up needed to take a pill each night so i could get a good nights sleep!

Great location - all the benefits of being at the heart of the city but without the noise or pressure... Calton Hill is the backdrop. Friendly, easy welcome and service.

Our suite - the Gordon - was chic, spacious and full of thoughtful technology - espresso coffee machine, ipod recharge station, two huge flat screen tv/music stations and enough cushions to break an unexpected parachute fall. The bathroom was spacious and light with a deep bath tub and a shower of "drive-in" proportions.

Take the lift to floor 3 and you will emerge into the wonderful spa - lovely, lovely ambience. Horizontal wall slate design, clever lighting... feels like swimming in an enchanted grotto.

When you emerge from the spell of the spa, the gymn next door is bristling with helpful calorie burning equipment and smells fresh and clean (not always the case in sweaty gyms). We burned a few calories but definitely not enough to compensate for our excellent full Scottish breakfast (cooked to order) which also included the continental fruit, muesli, pastries etc. I especially enjoyed eating slices of water melon and pineapple in a leisurely breakfast in the stylish restaurant while looking out at civil servants marching purposefully along the street to work.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we will be back.

Reception was friendly and efficient, our room was spacious & clean with the bathroom in an imaculate condition. The meals were very good value, beautifully presented and the home made bread was fantastic, congratulations Chef.
The hotel is idealy situated for all the main sites of interest and that includes shopping for my wife who was in her element. We walked everywhere and we are both senior citizens and did not find it hard going.
Special tip to those arriving by train at Waverley Station, leave the station by the back entrance, turn left and 50yds on the right is the service entrance to the hotel (easily missed! but it does have a small plaque on the wall) press the buzzer and they let you in, then use the lift to reception also leave the hotel that way on departing saves on time and carrying cases?
Only one minor point for anyone thinking of visiting this hotel:
1) Each evening at dinner the chef puts on a "special" but sometimes the busy staff forget to inform you, just ask, it is well worth it, my wife can vouch for that.

Our first trip to the Apex Waterloo Place and we were not disappointed. The hotel is in an excellent location pretty much on Princes Street, ideal for shopping, sightseeing and of course the many pubs and restaurants Edinburgh has to offer. The hotel is very elegant, communal areas chic and contemporary with v modern guestrooms. 42 inch lcd TV, huge bed, modern decor, we stayed in an executive room with a large bathroom with free standing bath and superb views. Room service v reasonable (£2.50 tray charge for breakfast - can't get better than that!). The staff were fantastic, very friendly, polite and totally customer focused. All in all, an excellent hotel with fantastic staff and facilities. We are looking forward to a return visit in November and December.
