Found this hotel via Tripadvisor and was not disappointed. Location is perfect to walk everywhere and the room was clean, spacious and very nicely decorated. Didn't eat in the restaurant but the menu and food looked good. There is a good (and reasonably priced) eating place for breakfasts/snacks just outside the hotel. Turn right and on the corner. Would have no hesitation recomending this hotel.

I didn't have great expectations of this hotel as, having stayed in Edinburgh on business a number of times before, I'd found the hotels average and the staff generally unhelpful. But the Apex proved me wrong; it's a lovely hotel for a couple of days, in a fabulous location for exploring the city on foot and with friendly staff.

We were there on business during the Festival and even so it was a peaceful haven with nicely furnished rooms, lovely bathrooms (love the bath duck they leave for you!) and a modern, yet unflustered air. Breakfast was a bit average but it was during Festival and to be fair the basics were well covered. And best of all it isn't too expensive. Most hotels during Festival charge crazy money but this was a good hotel at a good price and for that alone Apex deserve a 'well done'.

I'd certainly stay again on business, although when I go up with the family, I may want somewhere that feels a little more suited to that market.

Unfortunately my first impression of the Apex wasn't good as the receptionist looked as if the world was coming to an end & certainly didn't give a warm welcome. I put it down to a bad day but it was the same the next morning when I went to report a blown lightbulb in my room. I just stayed here for 5 nights and the bed clothes were NEVER changed and eventhough I had booked a double room I got two seperately made up single beds pushed together.

While the location is good there are LOTS of hotels in the area for the same price or cheaper so I'd recommend you try one of them before the Apex. While the staff are polite I can't say they are friendly with the exception of a small blond Scottish lady at reception who is lovely. Good points for the hotel are the leisure centre is nice though it's a pity it doesn't have a jacuzzi and every day the maid left lovely shortcake biscuits in the room.

I'm conscious that I'm going against the trend on reviews for this hotel and seem like a very fussy guest but I'm being honest as Trip Adviosr is a great place for giving advice.

Stayed at this hotel recently and was amazed to have found such a excellent hotel in the heart of Edinburgh. The hotel is in an amazing location right beside princess street. The room we got was spacious, clean and modern. The bed was so comfortable and bathroom was spotlessly clean. Staff were very friendly and very helpful. All in all we have a fab stay and will definitely be returning.

I specifically asked for a room away from the front of the building as we arrived about 9pm after a long haul from Australia.Even an overnight stopover in Dubai didn't alleviate our tiredness. We had a very quiet room with a very comfortable king size bed which suited our needs perfectly for a good nights sleep. Breakfast the next morning was very good, but I found it pricey. There is a little cafe just on the corner that does a much cheaper breakfast but we didn't try it.
My husband enjoyed the 42 " widescreen LCD TV at night and the bathroom was clean not confined and with toiletries provided. The rooms were very tidy. tea and coffee were in room as well as a fridge, safe, iron and ironing board. We could have free local calls if need be , a free newspaper at the desk and the Apex rubber duckie left for us has now gone to my new baby great nephew born while we were away.
We stayed two nights and walked up Princes St, took the hop on and off bus tour and walked back to the hotel. So convenient. The Edinburgh Tour ( green bus) does pull up just up the road, but then it is not that far into Waverley Bridge by foot from the hotel.
I went up to Carlton Hill which is just up from the hotel and spent time there taking photos over the city. Very convenient. We also went to Jamie's Scottish Evening at the Thistle Hotel just in walking distance around the corner in Leith Street on the last night.
On the second day, we did not have breakfast there as we got underway early to pick up our hire car and head to Oban. We got a reasonably priced and plentiful breakfast on the way.
In hindsight, forgoing the price of the breakfast, I would still recommend the hotel as it close to everything in Edinburgh City. We really should have spent more time there as the city itself is so interesting, we hardly covered everything in our short stay.

Location - good, near the shopping area.

Rooms - average size, clean, would need some refurbishment. Air conditioning is rarley working as it is supposed to. Warm water fluctuation. Wi-fi internet available - the login procedure is a pain; and so is the signal strength.

Breakfast - very poor. If you want extra, please be ready to pay 7 GBP for an omelette.

This is a lovely hotel. We got a very good price on a good sized room with separate bath and shower and all of the usual facilities. If you lean out of the window you can see the top of Carlton Hill otherwise the view is of Waterloo Place and a very grand graveyard but that's not a real drawback since the hotel is placed five minutes walk from the station, the airport bus, all the tour buses, the top of Princes Street and Edinburgh's two greatest pubs (the Guldford and the Cafe Royal). The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning/heating controllable. The room was quiet which is a big help. Breakfast is very much a cut above the usual chain hotel buffet with all hot food cooked to order. The Scottish breakfast is a fine example of a breakfast and will see you through the day. The menu also includes Eggs Benedict and Florentine as well as grilled smoked haddock, a real treat, We didn't eat in the evening but the hotel menu looked very good. The bar was quiet and not overpriced. One minor problem is that the housekeeping service rune to 6pm. Twice we came back to the hotel to find the room had not been made up but both times this was dealt with promptly and both times we were given a free drink in the bar. Given the state of some of the hotels in the centre of Edinburgh and the price they charge this was a real find.
