“Excellent high quality hotel - cosy and authentic atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2011

This hotel was booked as a surprise by my partner for my birthday 2 night weekend away. We were booked into the Saintsbury Suite which was huge room with amazing decor, with a huge romantic victorian style stand alone bath which was featured at the back of the room next to a large monsoon shower. The toilet and wash basin was in a separate room. The bed was also very big and very comfortable with soft and very warm duvet and pillows (must have been goose or duck feathers), it was was extremely clean with quality furnishings, everything we needed was already provided in the room such as iron, ironing board, hair dryer etc. The hotel and the room surpassed our expectations, the detail throughout the whole of the hotel was nothing short of spectacular, the rustic cosy atmosphere was amazing. There were lots of lovely rooms outside of the hotel room itself to sit and relax with a glass of wine. From the moment we checked in to the moment we left , staff were polite and helpful, ensuring our needs were catered for. The restaurant was also amazing, the breakfast was beautifully cooked with a choice of pastries, cereals, juices and fruit with a choice of cooked options from the menu, on both occasions i had the salmon and scrambled eggs which was absolutely lovely and my partner had the cooked breakfast which came with the best black pudding we had ever tasted. The location of the hotel was always perfect as it was our first visit to Edinburgh and was about 5mins walk from the Royal Mile and 10mins to the city centre so all the attractions, activities, restaurants and bars were just a short walk away. We would definitely recommend this hotel and restaurant, very highly recommended. Lovely experience. Thank you hotel du vin.

Room Tip: The delux rooms are definitely worth the extra cost... amazing rooms

We were booked into the Dom Perignon Suite to Celebrate my 5oth Birthday. The Suite was huge, and no expense has been spared on decor. It catered for our every need,a huge bath and monsoon shower surpassed our expectations, was extremely clean, soft furnishings done with taste using quality materials. From the moment we checked in to the moment we left , staff were polite and helpful, ensuring our needs were catered for.
What l liked the most was the professional manner in which staff conducted their duties, so many places lack professionalism these days , so it was a real treat ! We have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel Du Vin to anyone - Thanks to you all. Karen Vidler 21st October

Previously we have stayed at The Balmoral & The Scotsman but on this visit I wanted to try something new & Hotel du Vin was recommended by friends.

The Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh used to be the old lunatic asylum in the late 1700s & some of this extraordinary history can still be seen in the way the building has been converted, the exposed walls & the layout of the corridors, as well as the occasional plaque. However, it was very difficult to really get any indepth information of the building's history which was a shame (but maybe it's simply not avialable).

The hotel is in a great location for visiting all of Edinburgh & I prefer the old part of the town so this makes it a perfect base.

I booked a larger room as I'd read a lot of comments about how small the rooms were in previous reviews. Even the larger room is only of average size, but I loved the decor, the bed was a proper superking, there was a sofa at the end of the bed & all in it was a very comfortable room.

The only oddity was having the bath (a lovely big roll top) in the bedroom & the shower (a fabulous large wet room) separated from the bedroom only with a glass partition! This was a bit strange & I would have preferred a separate bathroom.

The service was the only disappointment. Throughout our short visit it was all a little haphazard. There is a lovely whisky bar but it was impossible to get anyone to serve us a drink on the Friday evening - staff came & went but after 30 minutes of waiting we decided to try the other bar but it was fill to burst so we gave up!

I wasn't overly filled with confidence in the staff (booking taxis was all very disorganised), but they were all charming & poilte.

We did not use the bistro although the breakfast looked amazing on Sunday morning!

All told, I would stay here again as we had such a wonderful few days.

Room Tip: If budget permits, definitely go for a larger room option.

Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh exceeded all the great recommendations we had heard about staying here.

Upon our arrival you really get a feel for how special the hotel is. We were well taken care of from start to finish; from the friendly and helpful front desk staff to the spectacular room to the delicious meal in the restaurant to our departure the next day. There were so many moments that resonate with us and are still loud and clear weeks after our stay.

The staff and service are what really make this hotel truly outstanding; focused and friendly staff who have an exceptional way of working - flawless service always delivered with a warm smile.

We opted to eat in the hotel restaurant and highly recommend you do so too. Donald Russell, the Royal butcher, is a supplier to the hotel and we couldn't resist opting for the steaks as a main; however, with the course options on offer, you may take as long as us to decide what to have!

The next day we wished to explore Edinburgh; however, we had a few ideas about what to see but needed some assistance. The hotel staff were immensely helpful, going above and beyond to ensure we had a very special day and saw everything we wanted to see.

Hotel du Vin Edinburgh is a wonderful experience. We were truly spoiled beyond any expectations we had. The hotel surpasses the majority of 5-star hotels we have stayed in. We loved every minute and cannot wait to return.

We rarely write online reviews, however, after our recent stay in a luxury hotel elsewhere (not Hotel du Vin), we realised how much we appreciated our stay at Hotel du Vin and decided to voice our delight on Trip Advisor.

A special thanks must go to Graham Chalmers, the General Manager. We remembered Graham from his time at One Devonshire Gardens and were delighted to see his familiar face upon arrival - he and his staff really set the standard.

A massive and warm thank you Hotel du Vin and we will see you again very soon!

Just been staying here for a short visit to Edinburgh. The hotel is prefectly located for local tourist attractions such as the National Museum of Scotland, Grass Market and Royal Mile. Pop into nearby Elephant House for coffee or lunch as a break from your touring or for comfort food try 'Mum's Choice' just around the corner if you are on a budget. The rooms were lovely - well furnished and I really appreciated all the little extras like the coffee machine, selection of magazines and goodies in the fridge. The rooms and hotel have a real atmosphere...a sense of history with a modern, stylish touch.I loved the bar area - prefect spot to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine snuggled into a comfortable leather chair reading a book - look out for the wine glass chandelier. The restaurant is comfortable - but doesn't offer high end menu.. Breakfast was very good. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay.Definitely would stay here again and recommend to others.
