“Start by improving your signage!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

While the restored building is delightful, it is a confusing layout that is not helped by a lack of signage. Further, the lighting in the rooms is dim and with small windows, it's dark on the sunniest of days. Finally, the HVAC system is inadequate, so the rooms are very warm. All in all, the bells and whistles don't make up for these shortcomings.

Dear LadyLawyer,

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry you found the listed building not to your taste regarding signage. The hotel is quite quirky and the signage is located in main areas to ensure ease of moving around. All of our rooms do vary in size due to location, so some windows in the upper old part of the building may have smaller windows. Many of our rooms have floor to ceiling windows which let in plenty of light.

Thank you once again and best regards,
Michael

My partner and I stayed on Friday night as we were attending an event at the Lyceum theatre just down the road. It was very much a last minute online booking!

The room was lovely, clean, and comfortable..also despite being on Bristo Street it was quiet! Brilliant really considering it was a Friday night.

Dinner was lovely, we again made a last minute reservation and could only get a table at 6pm which suited us (although, make sure you book in advance if you want a specific time!)

Breakfast was also lovely!

The only negative part of our stay was the bill..obviously we knew how much the room was up front. We had dinner on the Friday evening and put it on the room tab, including a 10% gratuity as it was a tick box on the receipt we had to sign (I think you could choose 5, 10 or 15 percent)..we also had a chocolate bar out of the mini bar! Yum! When the bill came they had included our gratuity, but they had also added their own service charge which was around £8..not much but enough to rattle us as we had already left a tip! Also our little chocolate bar cost us £3.50!!

All in all a nice stay, but be careful about what you're paying for!

Dear KatieKateWilson,

Thank you for your detailed review of Hotel du Vin and I am delighted you last minute booking was enjoyable. It is a pleasure to read such lovely feedback and please do accept my apologies regarding the service charge element of the bill. The initial service charge is discretionary and can be taken off the bill if you so wish.

Thank you for sharing your experience and look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Late booking by my better half and it impressed. From the same stable as the Malmaison chain, and it shows. Caring and interested staff; well presented and quirky rooms; great breakfast; central location. Hope to use it as a base again.

Room Tip: Roll a dice - they're all good!

Stayed recently with my girlfriend, after lots of searching for the perfect hotel we chose hotel du vin.. Well what can I say its perfect, location is brilliant you are 5 min walk from the castle, round the corner from the Scottish museum. Room was brilliant and drinks in the bar were great. My girlfriend loved the variety on the cocktail menu. Only downside is parking, but we didn't mind after such a great stay

My husband, daughter & I recently spent 4 nights here, in 2 rooms. Lots of character combined with modern amenities. Exposed brick walls, warm, cozy dining & bar areas, and outdoor patio. Staff was extremely attentive, polite & helpful. Continental breakfast buffet delicious. Overall great experience.

A wonderful stay for a birthday weekend. The hotel has been sensitively designed in a beautiful old building in a wonderful location. We had a beautiful suite complete with roll-top bath in the bedroom.

The bedroom also had a juliet balcony overlooking the courtyard. Whilst other hotels in Edinburgh boast more spectacular views the location of this hotel sets it apart - in the heart of the hold town with great access to everything you will want to visit, I think it is a real boon to be away from the hustle and bustle of Princess Street. It always amazes me that Edinburgh planners have allowed what must be one of the most beautiful streets on the planet to be dominated by high street stores and budget hotels - a real shame.

The staff were warm and friendly. Definitely recommend.

Dear Bruce,

Thank you very much for taking the time out to post your review about Hotel du Vin. It is a pleasure to read you had an enjoyable stay and found the team to be warm and courteous.

Edinburgh is indeed a fantastic city with so much changing everyday. Hotel du Vin chose well, when appointing a hotel in the Old Town to blend in with existing architecture.

Once again, thank you and I do hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back again in the near future.

Michael

I want to write an amazing review for Hotel du Vin. It has so much excellent potential but there are a few flaws.
We stayed twice as a stopover for a few nights on the way up to the Highlands for our wedding and on the way back for a night before leaving from Edinburgh airport.
The hotel is in an old asylum and has been beautifully renovated. It's in a great location right near the Meadows.
On our first stay we were upgraded to a big studio 'La Grande Dame'. It is a spacious room up in the roof but weirdly laid out , dark and unfortunately a bit of a trek from reception to the room, whereby you have no wifi connection. We had to sit in the toilet if we wanted to get connection. So wasn't really great for us. Especially when trying to connect the baby monitor through WIFI- we ended up having to spend each night in our room. WIFI is terrible here and the fact that you have to constantly log in with email when the connection drops off had us tearing our hair out.
On the second trip back we stayed in a standard room which actually worked better regarding wifi and light. It was a squeeze with a baby crib in the room but it actually was just perfect for the night.
We did try the bar area on the 1st floor one night as we had friends visiting but it was so hot as all the radiators appeared to be on in the hotel, yet it was a modest 18 outside- unfortunately raining as there is a sweet patio area. The interior of the bar and restaurant is stylishly cozy but on both stays the restaurant and bar were hardly busy which is a shame. It would be great to have an atmosphere there and the food and drink that we did try were lovely.
On a more positive note the cleanliness and the staff are excellent. The beds are super comfy and the rooms really quiet.
I think if we go back to Edinburgh I would still want to stay here even though I would have to grin and bear the WIFI connection.

Room Tip: In Summer I would be weary of the rooms on the courtyard as I would expect people to be eating and d...

Dear Gracie,

Thank you for your lovely review of Hotel du Vin and many congratulations on your recent wedding nuptials. It was a pleasure to read your review and that you enjoyed many aspects of your stay. I do apologise for the wifi connection in your 1st suite and will investigate with my maintenance team.

It is an absolute pleasure your comments about my team and I thank you very much for that.

Once again thank you and wish you all the best in your future lives together.
