Enjoyed Sunday lunch at the Bistro in Hotel du Vin Edinburgh. We skipped the tomato soup starter and went for the French Chef's table which held a delicious selection of cold meats, pate's, pickles, seafood and warmly baked bread. I had roast chicken for my main while my partner had steak and chips, he said it was nice but nothing special. I enjoyed banana and rum bread and butter pudding with custard ice cream - sublime, while he enjoyed pineapple and mango carpaccio accompanied by coconut ice cream. This was accompanied by a bottle of house white and we felt excellent value for money (It is on deal for £49).

The ambience was great and there was a singer (quite loud) for a good duration of the time we were there. Service excellent, would highly recommend.

Ideal location, central to museums, castle, central bus stop/ routes one block away ..Quiet, helpful staff at front desk who provided correct change for buses, advice about routes, opening hours, distances..warmly greeted us upon return.

Rooms vary in, size amenities, named after vineyards which can be a bit confusing when one is jet lagged.
Also since the hotel built into a 300year old hospital/ poor house, not all the rooms easily accessed by elevator so inquire if this is important!
We bookended our 3 week Scotland trip with several nights in Edinburgh on both ends..we had a small but nicely appointed (coffee, fresh milk and snacks in room) room with some early morning street noise. When we returned 2 weeks later for our last 3 nights in Edinburgh we were welcomed with a quiet beautiful, antique- filled large room with sitting area ..up higher, further back off the street.
Highly recommend the hotel for location , ambience and staff!

This is our second visit, we came last year for a 'once only' fringe experience. We chose to stay at this hotel again as we so enjoyed our experience last year. We were delighted to find that all the very attentive staff are the same. The breakfast is excellent with great choices, and if it is not on the menu they are happy to offer more choices. Unfortunately my husband badly burnt his feet two days before departure, so I had to explain his interesting choice of footwear !! The hotel is in a great location for exploring and the bus stop is located a short 'shuffle' away so ideal for someone with 'mobility' issues to get around, we bought a weeks bus pass which is very reasonable. The room was always clean and the bed was so comfortable. Last year I was in a room overlooking the courtyard (Grove) which was very quiet, this year I was in sassicia which over looked the street and was very noisy at night as there is a fringe venue located over the road. I would not hesitate to stay here again as it is a lovely hotel and the staff are lovely, but I would opt for the quieter (and more pronounceable) room overlooking the courtyard.

Room Tip: rooms overlooking courtyard are quieter, went during the 'fringe' so might not always be so noisy as there is a venue opposite.

The Hotel du Vin chain is my favorite in Scotland. The property in Edinburgh has a great protected courtyard that is a great place to meet friends old and new, eat and drink. The bothy is a cozy place to stay warm on a cool Scottish evening. I will be back every time I visit Scotland.
