“Great location & lovely hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

Stayed here for a weekend away with my husband. We booked a junior suite which was really lovely. The room size was great, we had a nice view down to Princes Street and up to Calton Hill. Very comfortable bed and very well set up.

The location is great, just off the Royal Mile so near the Grassmarket, Castle and only a 5 minute walk to the New Town. Walking back from the New Town area involves either quite a few hills or a lot of steps so probably not suitable for elderly or infirm people but this possibly the only downside. Would definitely stay again.

Dear V W,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay with us. I am delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your Junior Suite, the rooms are extremely comfortable with luxurious furnishings and comfortable beds, I am pleased that you slept well.

The location of the Fraser Suites is fantastic, being in the heart of the Old Town but with such easy access to Princes Street and the Gardens is wonderful. As you note there are plenty of steps around the city, a huge advantage for the Castle dwellers of olden times but for us quite exhausting! Fortunately for us, Edinburgh has a fantastic public transport network which means you need not rely on tired legs to get you around. The brand new tram network together with the frequent and well spread bus network makes getting around easy. Our friendly team always have great suggestions should you wish to either stretch or save your legs.

I hope that you will return to Edinburgh soon and I look forward to welcoming you at Fraser Suites.

Kind Regards,

Evlyn

We stayed a week at this hotel in very central Edinburgh. The hotel and its staff were very pleasant and helpful. The room, while small and not air conditioned, had a great view, comfortable bed, and was clean. Our only issue was that being on a top floor with only one window, the room got very hot and uncomfortable. It would have been nice to have a ceiling fan.

We stayed at the Fraser Suite Edinburgh for 6 nights in the Observatory Suite (Room 408), this is the only suite with a private balcony overlooking Calton Hill and Old Town. This suite has the original 19th century mid-Victorian architecture & wooden paneling with high windows cleverly restored. The suite décor is finished with classic red and gold colour theme furniture & accessories for dramatic regal feel.

This suite has walk-in wardrobe, an open plan living area, kitchenette and a large bathroom with both shower and bath. The kitchenette includes cook top, microwave, dishwasher & fridge and there is also self service laundry room at level 1.

Fraser Suite Edinburgh is historically offices and printing workshops for The Edinburgh Courant, one of Scotland’s oldest newspapers and pioneers of the “Fleet Street” of Edinburgh in 1870s. It is cleverly restored to an apartment hotel and retains the mid-Victorian grey sandstone external façade with Scots Baronial detailing.

The hotel has 7 levels and the topographical site at St Giles Street descends away steeply on the north elevation along the News Steps to the lower levels of Market Street and the Waverley Valley. The reception area is located on level 3 of the hotel (St Giles Street Level / Ground Level), there are 2 levels below the ground level and 4 levels above the ground level.

The hotel has a range of accommodation including room, apartments (Studio / One Bedroom) and suites (Junior Suite, Observatory Suite, Princes Suite, Courant Suite) to suit different guest requirements.

I understand that Princes Suite and Courant Suite features are similar to Observatory Suite except for the suite size and décor. The Observatory, Princes and Courant Suite size is 42 m2, 48 m2 and 51 m2 respectively. The Princes Suite décor is contemporary French with panoramic view of Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street & Firth of Forth while the Courant Suite has similar décor but only view of the Edinburgh Castle and this suite is named after the building’s first occupants “The Edinburgh Courant”.

Fraser Suite Edinburgh is about 25 – 35 minutes drive from Edinburgh Airport. The hotel is located in the quiet street of St Giles Street which is just off the main street The Royal Mile, 1 – 2 minutes walk to The Royal Mile & St Giles Cathedral, 5 minutes walk to Edinburgh Castle and 5 - 10 minutes walk to The Grassmarket via Victoria Street. Along Victoria Street / W Bow, you can find a lot of unique shops leading to The Grassmarket for more café and restaurant options. We enjoyed our coffee and breakfast at the young and vibrant Hula Juice Bar.

Bus stops and train station is about 5 – 10 minutes walk from the hotel, walk down the News Steps, Market Street then over the Waverley Bridge. On the bridge, there are bus stops for Airlink (Edinburgh Airport Bus) & Hop on and off bus (The Majestic Tour, the Edinburgh Tour, CitySightseeing Edinburgh & MacTours City Tour) and below the bridge is the Waverley train station.

Another 5 – 10 minutes walk will take you to Princes Street where retail outlets like Topshop, M&S, Jenners, House of Fraser, H&M and Primark are located. Attractions like Scottish National Gallery & Scott Monument are nearby from the Princes Street Gardens, as you walk along the park you can see the Edinburgh Castle up above.

The street parallel to Princes Street is George Street where café, boutique & specialty shops like Penthaglion’s, The Dome, Molten & Brown are located.

Fraser Suite Edinburgh is a unique heritage hotel with easy access to major tourist attractions, shops and restaurants.

All staffs are happy to be of service to you and thank you to Miss Evyln Grunwell for your kind assistance in selecting the appropriate suite type to suit my requirements.

I would suggest Fraser Suite Edinburgh to revamp their website to provide more specific configuration details for each room / suite type to allow potential guest understand better and save time guest enquiring & clarifying with the hotel. Positive changes like providing a link for each room / suite type from the main page “Accommodation & Features” and each page dedicated for each room / suite type should detail the room / suite size, maximum occupancy number, bedding options, facilities available, special features and photos for the specific room / suite.

We enjoyed our stay at the Fraser Suite Edinburgh and shall return to discover more gems in this rich cultural heritage city.

Room Tip: If budget allows, stay in one of the signature suites. If not, ask for room / suite from level 4 upw...

Dear dan_leong88,

Wow! Thank you so much for your five star and detailed review.

I am so pleased that you loved the Observatory Suite, it is my personal favourite for the very reasons you mention. A fantastic view toward Calton Hill for your very own balcony, fantastic on a sunny morning with a freshly brewed espresso!

The features and character of the room are also wonderful, as you mentioned in such wonderful detail. I love the feature stained glass and traditional wooden panelling which really remind you how historic our beautiful building and city are. It is lovely to hear your appreciation for the history of the building.

I am sure that other guests visiting the area will appreciate the information about the local area also, a fantastic travel guide. I am sure you must have explored Edinburgh well during your time here.

I shall pass on your suggestions to add more information to our website regarding room facilities and sizes, I am sure that you noticed that being a converted building each room is quite individual.

I am delighted that I was able to assist you in choosing your room and that it was suitable for your family. I hope that on your next trip to the UK you will visit us again and I look forward to welcoming you then.

Kind Regards,

Evlyn

Located next to St. Giles Cathedral and in the middle of the Royal Mile, the location is difficult to beat. Castle just up the hill, plentiful restaurants and pubs nearby, and a short walk to the train station. Rooms are spacious by European standards, clean and very comfortable bedding. Be aware that rooms towards the back may have obstructed views, so request a chamber with a view. Highly recommended. Fraser Suites Edinburgh would be my first choice of hotel in which to stay on our next trip to Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view. Rooms towards the rear may have obstructed views.

Dear jayc2007,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay with us. I am delighted that you found your stay so enjoyable. The area is fantastic for visiting all the sites as well as being a little oasis away form the buzzing Royal Mile.

I shall pass on your lovely comments to the team who will be delighted that you found them so helpful, polite and cheerful.

The complimentary use of the laundry facilities is a great help to our longer stay guests. As is the inhouse gymnasium though many of our guests find the many sets of stairs around Edinburgh enough of a workout!

I hope that you will be returning to Edinburgh soon and I look forward to welcoming you again.

Arrived home yesterday following a stay in Edinburgh at the Fraser Suites. The location is right in the centre only a few minutes walk from the Castle. The staff are friendly and polite and nothing is too much trouble. The bed was so comfy and the room was immaculate. This is the second time I've stayed there and won't be the last!

I booked one night at the Fraser suites on the same day of arrival so I was allocated in the ground floor, the last they had available. It is a lovely room, well iluminated and clean. My only sugestion about the room its a little improvement in the bathroom, which even was very clean - (apart from the shower courtain that had a black marks) it did has some mould in the corner of the wall, but to be honest, that didn´t affect my stay. The best part of the stay was , without hesitation, the reception staff. The 4 girls I have spoke with were very helpful, pleasant and welcoming at all times. So thank you very much!
And yes, I would return to this hotel, as the location cannot be better!
