“A fully 5star stay”
Reviewed 17 January 2010

I take my husband away every January for his birthday, we've stayed at all the top Edinburgh hotels over the years, and this was the best so far. If you love design, you'll love this hotel, but more than that, outstanding customer service, I've never experienced such fast & courteous service, and well done to every single member of staff, someone has done a seriously good job of staff training & treatment here, and it shows. We had lunch in Cucina, aboslutely delicious, very well presented, served & excellent value for money at £12 for two courses. We asked for a quiet room & had a great night's sleep. If you don't know Edinburgh, the hotel location is superb. I'd recommend it to anyone (and will!)

DH and I headed to Edinburgh for Hogmanay - we are Edinburgh regulars, and decided to stay somewhere new. We found an excellent web deal for Missoni, had read about its opening in the news AND excellent reports on gold old TA!

The hotel is located at the corner of the Royal Mile and the George IV so fantastically convenient location - minutes from the Castle, close to some great bars and restaurants, and easy walking distance of Princes Street. However, the entrance of the entrance is not the easiest to spot - we nearly walked past it!

Once we walked in, a member of staff took our luggage and escorted us to one of the reception desks - great first impression! It was about 11am and check in was 2pm, but the receptionist still checked to see if our room was ready. Unfortunately it wasn't, but receptionist advised that they would look after our luggage and they would call us when it was ready.

So, we went out for a wander and then lunch - and before long, we got the message that our room was good to go. We went back to the hotel, and the same receptionist recognised us from before and brought us our keys. She advised that the lifts require a key to activate them, and other little details about breakfast times etc.

Our room was on the 3rd floor and had a nice view of George IV Bridge and the Salisbury Craggs in the distance - a definite bonus for a centrally located hotel.

The decor is very contemporary, with the Missoni flair in every corner of the room - from the bedspread, to the dressing gowns, to the tea cups! Our luggage was there, ready and waiting - plenty of wardrobe space for our clothes.

Our rate included a free mini-bar and two free laundry items - which DH took advantage of immediately, by sending his shirts fo pressing - bonus! There is also a Nespresso machine with a selection of coffee "pods" plus a nice selection of teas.

The bathroom is compact but definitey not cramped - no bath but a double shower with two types of showerhead; one overhead sort of rainfall type and a normal type. Good selection of toileteries are provided; if I was pressed to find a fault, the conditioner is a little runny, but hey - hardly the end of the world! In the evening, a turn down service is offered.

There is a Bang & Olufsen TV with speakers in the bathroom (something I LOVE) - the rate also included a movie but we never had time to take advantage of this. It looks as though you can play your own DVDs/CDs but we couldn't work out how - there wasn't a hotel/room guide. Not sure if this was an omission or whether there just isn't one published - one never appeared during our 3 night stay, so we assume that this is case. However, one would be useful for the TV system and the Nespresso - took us several goes to get it to work!

The bar in the hotel is fantastic - great selection of cocktails and Procsecco on tap, and as I love the stuff it's fast become my favourite bar! The staff were fabulous - really friendly to talk to but were able to sense when discretion was called for. We will DEFINITELY go back to the bar even if we end up staying somewhere else.

We had dinner one night in La Cucina - food and service were absolutely superb; very friendly yet efficient staff. We also had breakfast on New Years Day - well, suppose it was brunch really because it must have been about 12pm (they served breakfast until 2pm!!! - bonus!). Lovely selection of fresh Italian pastries, fruit and juices and an excellent cooked breakfast.

The sevice we received at Hotel Missoni is really second to none - everyone we encountered was friendly, very keen to help and they delivered every time. Also, we saw a lot of the same faces suggesting that there is definitely a Missoni staff "family" - and all staff were familiar with everything the hotel offered e.g. the bar staff knew the food served in the restaurant, the restaurant staff knew about the hotel rooms - adding to the "Missoni family" feel.

We've stayed at other hotels of a similar calibre like the Sheraton, the Caledonian, the Scotsman, the Bonham, Channings, the Roxburghe, the Radisson and the George - and with regards to service and style, Hotel Missoni definitely supercedes all of these.

As you may have guessed, we'll definitely return! Thanks for reading :o)

Location :
The location of the hotel is fantastic. It's located right on the Edinburgh's Royal Mile. Surrounded by lovely tourist shops, restaurants and 2 minutes walking distance from Edinburgh Castle. Princess St is an easy 5 minute down hill walk.

Room :
Positives : The first impressions of our room (514) were good. It's very stylish, in a way only the italians can do. The view over the mile and Arthur's seat are good and the main justification for choosing the slightly dearer rooms on the upper floors. The mini bar contained beer, soda, milk, water and one bag of crisps. The Nesspresso coffee machine came with a great selection of teas and coffees, no biscuits though. Even though your on the Royal Mile there is no noise, the room was very quiet.

Negatives: The room was small, with very little storage space. We stayed for 2 nights and had to leave most of out clothes in our cases. There is no bath in any of the non suite rooms, this is a big negative for us but maybe not such an issue for others.

Restaurant : WOW !! We ate in the hotels restaurant on friday night. It was quite simply some of the best food i've eaten. The quality of the food combined with attentive, polite and friendly service made it one of the finest dining experiences i've had in a long time. The only negative thing i have to say about the meal was the price of the wine. The average price of a bottle is £50 - £60, too much.

Would I recommend Hotel Missoni ? Yes

Would I stay again ? No, but it's is defiantly in the top 10 hotels in the capital.

This hotel definitely has the 'wow' factor. The rooms and bathrooms are funky, the beds are really comfy and the free mini bar is an excellent touch. The hotel is in an excellent location, close to local bars, Princes Street and other tourist attractions. The bar was really cool too and the bar staff were very friendly. It was excellent value for money and we were even allowed to check into our room early too. The only constructive criticism I'd have is that the service is not very consistent, it is not yet run as a well oiled machine and this is the only thing that let it down, although for the price of the room this can be forgiven, but had we paid more this may have been different.

My partner booked this hotel for me as a birthday treat, and what a treat it was. I like modern contemporary hotels and Hotel Missoni ticks all the boxes. Everything about this hotel is fabulous.

We arrived on a cold January afternoon (minus 8) and were greeted outside the hotel entrance by a kilted conceirge who immediately took all our bags. This hotel has the wow factor and it hits you as soon as you walk through the door. We checked in at reception and were given a complimentary upgrade because it was my birthday, a lovely gesture by the hotel staff. We stayed in a high floor room which had amazing views to Edinburgh Castle. The room was lovely, spotlessly clean, beautiful bed linen, plasma tv with a choice of movies, music etc, coffee machine and compimetary mini bar. Bathroom also lovely with underfloor heating, robes, missoni product toiletries, fluffy towels and excellent power showers. At night there is a turn down service and the staff lay rugs at either side of the bed so when you get up in the morning you stand on the rug, not the cold floor, well thought out, they also leave a little chocolate on your bedside table.

The hotel bar has a lovely vibe about it, great atmosphere and fantastic staff who are very attentive, there's no waiting around in this hotel to be served, a big thanks to Vera the lovely girl who looked after us in the bar. The drinks list is extensive and has lots of choice, we had cocktails and champagne as a treat for my birthday. There is a bar food menu with different choices and we had the cheeseburger and chips while drinking our champagne, classy I know! but it went quite well together. We did not eat in the main restaurant in the hotel as we wanted to sample the delights of the restaurants in Edinburgh, so cannot comment on this.

Although this hotel has beautiful surroundings, customer service is where this hotel excels, every single member of staff of whom we came in to contact with were very nice and went out of their way to be helpfull (a rarity in hotels these days). A lot of other big name hotels could learn a lot from the staff here, they have cutomer service fine tuned.

If you are reading this review and are thinking of staying here, I would say go ahead and book you will not regret it, its a fabulous place to stay. If anyone can be critical of this hotel, they are just being fussy.

Spent 5 nights her visiting my daughter who was studying at U Edinburgh. Fantastic location about 5 min from the Castle, right on High St/The Royal Mile, which is the main drag in the Old Town area. Service was fantastic, very upbeat and helpful. Room was a decent size, not huge, but very nicely appointed. Loved the colorful decor. Average bathroom but huge shower and heated mirror which is really nice. Great "scene" at the bar, very trendy. Dinner at the restaurant was VERY expensive but quite good. All in all an excellent experience, would absolutely stay here again.
