Description: The Halfway House is the smallest pub in Edinburgh and situated a stone's throw from Waverley station - halfway up a flight of stairs ( a Close ) leading from the New Town up to the Old Town. The pub is popular with all kinds of people - tourists, locals, professionals, students and even the odd celebrity! Famous for its real ales, whiskies and Scottish food - the pub is an excellent spot to stop for a while, relax and experience the Pub's unique atmosphere. You'll be very welcome!!

What a find. We were staying in Edinburgh, and we cut up the fleshmarket steps to ge to The Royal Mile, and found this gem.

It'd beauty is its simplicity. It is a tiny, corner pub, but the welcome is massive.

We went back several times, and had either a pint or a coffee, but it just felt so warm and welcoming. It is one of those pubs you go to to say "We went there"

What a find - up the narrow passageway from Waverley Station towards the Royal Mile. It's a must-stop vintage pub steeped in twee-free Scottishness.

Whether you're a beer or whisky person - or just hungry, drop by and enjoy the friendly atmosphere where the welcoming staff will look after you and advise on the best dish of the day. We had a great sausage and mash - but trad Scottish dishes like Cullen Skink and Stovies are available.

Get there early as it can get busy.

On a recent visit to Edinburgh we tracked down this pub because of the positive comments and good reviews from previous customers and we were really disappointed. There was only a choice of 4 dishes available and the fish pie was warmed up in the microwave so the pastry was soggy and inedible. We left most of the food and went to another pub and ate there as we were both still very hungary

Just a few steps from the Old Town exit from the train station up a flight of stairs is this lovely little pub. It serves real Scottish fare, has an excellent choice of beers, friendly service, and a fantastic old interior. Given all the BAD choices up around the touristy Royal Mile, this is quite the find tucked away. Just cross Market Street, turn right, and go up the first set of stairs you find going up.
