“NO WAY HOSAY”
Reviewed 13 May 2012

well..... if i was staying here with the wife she would have said "NO WAY HOSAY" as soon as she walked through the door and went else where, but as it was a stag night for 32 lads it was bearable for the one night just to get our heads down after a night on the drink.
on arrival we asked our selves " who booked this!!" there was a bloke asleep on one of the many old sofas, we thought he was a tramp but later relised that he was the night time reception man who must sleep there during the day.
the reception is full of old junk, old books and even a life size sheep, old sofas dotted all over and not very hospitable or clean.
the dorm room 205 slept 12 of us in bunk beds which where a bit rocky to say the least.
you have to make your own bed and strip your bed on checking out, but if the beds where already made you would have not seen the state of the beds, quilt and pillows which where alful
the sheets where white and clean but we all slept with our clothes on!! yes it was that bad and if any body snores out load every body in the room knows about it, we where lucky we knew the lad who snored and woke him up to stop him snoring, but if you where in a dorm and did not know the snorer you could not wake him up and would have to put up with it!!
we where two quilts and a pillow short in our dorm so i found my way down the maze of corridors and stairs to the reception to ask for some bedding when the receptionist actually came he said he would bring them up for me.......STILL WAITING FOR THEM !!!
the showers and toilets where comunal and very basic to say the least, water in the showers was freezing and one of the floor tiles in front of on of the showers had lifted revealing a big hole in the floor
the hostel is run down and has old records glued all over to walls and floors.
the hostel is in a great location in the grass market right on the strip for the nightlife/bars and directly opposite Edinburgh castle
the Art Roch hostel used to be The Salvation Army so it was probably a doss house for the homeless and in my opinion i don't think it has had much money spent on it to turn it into a hostel

We were 7 friends and we booked a room for 8 people with private bathroom for two nights. Our room (number 104) was the worst I' ve ever seen in my entire life: there was not hot water in the shower, no heating, the floor was dirty and there was a water loss from the toilet, the basin and even the floor. The first night we have been forced to go to the reception and ask to change room because the situation was really insane and we felt like in Venice: the floor was being completely covered by the water!!!
They moved us to a bigger empty room (for 12 people) and we passed the night. This second room was ok. We did not have a private bathroom and consequently we used the commun toilets and showers: the showers at the first floor did not work at all and many toilets (first and second floor) were out of order because clogged by toilet paper.
After the first night issue the receptionist promised us to take care of anyone could not check in in our room (in order to have a private room) but when we went back in the night we found two new guests in our room.
After our complains they let us go without paying: we appreciated it but we would have preferred to be happy about our accomodation and pay instead of not paying and stay in su ch a terrible place.
Very well located, the hostel is in the center of the town and heart of nightlife but it's really easy to find something better in the same area.

The location: amazing! Everything else: barely tolerable. It's the little things - staff was regularly absent from the front desk for extended periods of time at all hours eg. our beds were stripped halfway through our stay which led to a 30 minute wait and arduous process to get new bedding, the rec room never closed, and security was almost nill. The rec room was alright - ping pong and pool table, tv, weights, and a decent kitchen with plenty of fridge space which came in very handy but it's also above the rooms and the walls/floor/ceiling are paper thin so bring ear plugs or sleep aids.

I will make it simple: do not go there.

To be honest the location is good. Apart from that everything is just dirty, ruined and even creepy. The rooms are dirty, the "decoration" is absolutely awful and the shower of our "ensuite room" did not have hot water at all. It is also very noisy at night.

I did not check any reviews for booking it and I regret profoundly. There are many hostels all around the city, so I strongly recommend not to go there.

we booked in for 14 people got there and was told we dont have a room so we were told to sleep in the common room which was good crack if no one else from the hostel was able to get in, we were given three matresses between all of us no duvets no pillows and no hot water for the showers to be fair we wouldnt get away with the madness of 14 guys on a stag do in a hotel so thats a good point the overall feel of the place was messy with not much organisation, im glad we stayed in the tent up stairs if it wasnt for that we would have been on the streets next time i go to edinburgh il be booking into the hotel next door.

Room Tip: make sure your defo booked in before you travel

At first, I was fairly neutral on the hostel - the bathrooms were fine (though the showers occasionally ran out of hot water), the common room was decent (though the tv was slightly broken), and the rooms weren't in a bad state. (Aside from one mysteriously broken bed, but as we had enough beds regardless it wasn't too big a problem.)

However, on our first night we discovered bugs in the beds, and understandably were rather concerned about this. Upon reporting this to the staff the next morning, we were told that someone would 'come up to have a look' later. As far as we are aware, this didn't happen. The problem only seemed to worsen as the trip progressed, and if we hadn't been limited by financial constraints we would have found another hostel. As it was, we spent a fun weekend in Edinburgh, but spent the nights utterly paranoid, looking around for any sign of movement in the shadows.

Other aspects of the hostel were, as I mentioned, fine, but I hope everyone will agree that it kind of pales in comparison to a bed bug infestation.

In conclusion, do not stay here unless you enjoy sharing your bed with strangers (and maybe even bringing some of them home)!

Room Tip: Avoid room 207 like the plague!

This place was not at all like the photographs! No lift working so you have to trudge up with your case The rooms are stuffy, small with bizarre decor and dodgy electrics! Our plug was falling off the wall! There is no storage in the rooms except for old suitcases also the water ran out when my friend was in the shower! They got it back on then it was just cold! No towels provided. It was more of a survival weekend than anything else! There was no continental breakfast and not even a cup in the kitchen to make a cup of tea! The staff were no help at all and just said 'really' when we told them then we had to pay 1.35 for one! To be honest the staff all looked confused whenever they were asked about anything! They paid no attention to us really! The lounge is a mismatch of Sofas and chairs with tat everywhere including a sheep!?? They had student groups trying to sort cases out in the lounge so we had nowhere to sit. No organisation at all... they had stuff all over...I'm sure it was a fire risk leaving piles of sheets everywhere! To be fair, it was clean and the beds were comfortable but you couldn't spend long chilling out in there because you would lose your mind!
