Owner description: This monument, although begun in 1822 was never finished. It was to have been an imitation of the Parthenon and now remains an unfinished but authentic part of Edinburgh's skyline.

“unfinished, uncared for but good”
Reviewed 13 December 2013

Whilst the review is supposed to be about the monument you can't help but having to mention the stunning views from up here.

Even though it is unfinished it is still quite impressive and must have taken a lot of effort in constructing and getting it up there.

Surrounded by rubbish though and area had an unkempt feel to it.

Calton Hill is nice for a wander anyway so you might as well see this up close at the same time. It is impressive.

“Don't make a separate trip to see it”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

Calton Hill is worth visiting for the views, and as long as you are there you cannot help but see the National Unfinished Monument. There are overgrown weeds on the back side. One interesting thing is its size. The completed part of the Monument represents only the steps of the Parthenon. Had they completed it, it would have been huge.

“Awful”
Reviewed 7 October 2013 via mobile

I really wonder how this construction can have 3, 4 or even 5 stars ratings. It's a very dull and anonymous piece of stone in the middle of the hill.
The place is full of rubbish and empty bottles of beers and if you manage to climb up the structure you'll see even more garbage on the other side. Seriously, what is that and what would you rate if you go to Greece or Sicily and see actual temples?

“Wonderful view”

After a "fresh" walk, first up to the monument and then a lot of stairs, you are rewarded with a great view of the surroundings. For those who doesn't feel like walking/climbing too much, there is a shuttle between the entrance and the monument.

“It's a pity...”

...that they didn't finish the construction. The size is impressive, and the view from the Firth of Forth to Holyrood Palace is remarkable.
