Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

“Not as impressive as I expected”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

Compared to a lot of castles, the Edinburgh castle was less extensive and some of the set ups were less than impressive. That being said, it was still cool and worth half a day. A tour guide isn't necessarily needed, as throughout the castle there are plaques with the history of the place written out. The crown jewels are definitely worth a visit, too.

“Historic charm”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

Visited 3 years ago to see the Tattoo. This time as a visitor from Essex to explore the castle. Obviously if you want to walk up to it you need to be reasonably fit otherwise get dropped off as near aspossible, although even inside the castle there are inclines. The history of the castle is well demonstrated throughout the various areas and rooms. The views overlooking the city are as you would expect beautiful . Anyone who visits Edinburgh should always visit the castle. There is an admission fee

“Is a tour worth it?”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

Let's face it, if you're in Edinburgh, certain sites are just "gotta do's." The Castle is one of 'em. It's on the expensive side and the lines are long, even off season. Should you join a tour? It depends on your personal preferences. We hate being chained to a group, preferring to poke and wander on our own, but on the other hand, on the tour you get to ask questions of a live guide. The audio tour is very detailed (read 'boring'). Most of the historical bits are well posted. The views are definitely good, but if you want fabulous views of the castle and the city, I'd recommend the Roof Terrace at the National Museum of Scotland. And it's a great place to start the walk down the Royal Mile. And if this is the first historical site stop of on your list, get the pass.
