Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

“Great place to visit”
Reviewed 6 May 2014 via mobile

The castle together with the queens palace provides a valuable insight to the castles day to day running as well as it's history. Would highly recommend to see the royal jewels and the one o'clock gun. They do a free 20 minute tour covering the outside of the castle.

“Amazing castle”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

We visited on a warm and sunny afternoon which obviously made the experience more enjoyable as the views from the castle are stunning. There is plenty of information regarding the history of the castle available as you walk around. It is not possible to see everything in one afternoon visit and we hope to return in the future.

This is well worth the admission price. Again, great views of the City, and everything is well-signposted and detailed. Of note is the National War Museum, a very moving and beautiful part of the castle. Didnt do the audio tour, but bought the glossy guidebook, (£4).

“A real macho-man castle!”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

We have visited several castles on our travels but this megalithic structure really made an impression. It is huge, perched atop the tallest hill, dark and intimidating, which of course was the purpose. One of those things that you looked up and are like "wow!" Totally impressive and amazing even to this day.

“A very impressive castle”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

The size and location of this castle in the middle of Edinburgh is impressive. Lots to see inside. Some very good historical displays in several of the buildings. It would have been better if we had been able to see the tattoo outside but we weren't there at the right time.
