Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

This is an impressive structure, with a central role in amazing historical events. The tour is self guided, but well marked to allow you to go to and spend time in the areas that interest you most. The tour includes different types of rooms, containing artifacts which lend context and reality to the experience. There is a very well done historical section which shows the lineage of the royalty, wars, and the king's crown and sword. Touring this beautiful castle at the start of our trip was thrilling, and gave us some perspective of the history in the city.

Most of this attraction is outside. The are is no library, portrait gallery, or armor hall; instead it's a beautiful collection of buildings on an extinct volcano. Beautiful. The tour guide was adorable and knowledgable and spoke for just the right amount of time.

Went here over weekend what a great place to visit and see some history of Scotland, full of helpful guides to give you an insight of the castle, this can be a very busy place only down side was the entry fee for adults was £16.00 so not a cheap day out, but good noe the less.

It is a fantastic defensive castle, but does not have much to see inside, its certainly not worth the 16 pounds!
