Owner description: St Giles’ Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. With its famed crown spire it stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland’s chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). Please do not book any tours through TripAdvisor, as they are not endorsed by the cathedral.

“A Gorgeous Protestant Edifice of Great Historic Importance”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

This beautiful cathedral with its unusual steeple that looks like a royal crown, is the place where John Knox preached his powerful, fiery sermons from 1559 to 1571 and made great contribution to the Reformation sweeping across Europe. Go to a brief noon worship service and remain afterward contemplating the words of the Gospel as you listen to a concert provided on the gorgeous, towering (50-60') organ so beautifully positioned in 1992 within the sanctuary. It has to be one of Scotland's and Europe's best organs. Most remarkable compared to so many other European churches is that St. Giles still has a vital, active Presbyterian congregation more than 500 years after Knox.

“Amazing Stain glass windows”
Reviewed 13 June 2012

I did not had much time to visit museums/churches/castles as I was checking for long let accomodation or my studies. However, I popped in Saint Gies cahedral and I was left jaw wide open with the marvel and incredible decor of this church, most noticably the stained glass. It was not ordinary stained glass, but as if 3D effect type of art was involved. Live Organ music gave a lot to the solemn atmospher of the church. There are other things that one can find here, but the stained glass stole my heart and eyes.!

You would not believe the amount of history inside this one building its free to get in to and well worth a visit. You can ask the guides inside any question you like on the church and they are all more than glad to help you anouther place to visit while in town

“One Among Many”

Impressive exterior and a good historical site on the Royal Mile. I would say you would want to see it, but there are other sites worth more of your time.
