Owner description: Fully restored period house.

Once you enter the home, it is a self paced tour. As you enter each room, there is a period dressed guide to inform you of what the function of room was & what activities were carried out in the room. There were explanations on the history of the Lamont family that built & lived in the home & what the social norms of the day were. It also broadened into history of the area. The video was excellent. This is a very good tour if you are interested in the history of Edinburgh.

If I could give this attraction 6 stars I would! This is a brilliantly restored Georgian townhouse which is a must see if you have even the slighest interest in the history of the New Town of Edinburgh. The video depicting the life of the Lamont's of Charlotte Square at the turn of the 19th century is very well done and very interesting. The rooms are beautifully recreated, and contain some magnificent pieces of furniture and works of art. The guides have so much knowledge, which they willingly share and make history come alive. Along with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, this was my favourite place to visit in Edinburgh. There is also a very good gift shop, which sells an excellent range of books and souvenirs.

This is a very interesting house that give you a good idea of how was the life in 1700 in Edinburgh. For a kid 10 years old it is an interesting way to learn story from a sideway perspective. Even smaller kids will find it interesting this place if they read or listened stories of the same time. The price is not too high and the persons in costume which explain you the contents of the rooms of the house really give you a ton of interesting information. Try to ask them: you will spend a nice hour. Also the movie of the life in the house is very interesting.

The Georgian House in Charlotte Square gives a fascinating insight into life in Edinburgh over the years, focusing on the building of the New Town. An informative video sets the scene at the start of the tour and thereafter knowledgable staff add to the tour with different aspects of the history - or leave you to browse, if you prefer. The shop was a little disappointing - a bit small and the stock was generic NTS stuff - very little of specific relevance to the property. That aside, a very worthwile and informative visit.
