Starters excellent, main course good, desert OK. Desert could have had a bit more sticky toffee rather than just the pudding.
It was a Holiday Monday, so restaurant was busy, but service was rather slow. If it had not been for Johnny the service would have been pretty bad. Lunch took 2 hours.

Great venue for a family breakfast followed by a stroll in the gardens. We had a party of 14 plus three very young children. Ages ranged from 3 months to 86 years. We were well taken care of by Johnny.

We were out for a family day out and visited the Gardens - while there, we decided to have lunch at the Gateway Restaurant - the other one up the hill, although again great location and very young child friendly, has to endure lots of bustle and hence perhaps less relaxing - also the service is canteen style rather than table. We preferred the set up of the Gateway Restaurant.

First of all it was busy - always a good sign - however this can mean that there is a bit of a delay and service is not as attentive as we would ideally have liked. On this occasion we were very lucky - we were served by Johnny who was helpful, patient and attentive - it was obvious that he was wanting us to have a good experience. We had a couple of issues re the menu (challenge when having two children under 10 years old) however again Johnny was quick to deliver a positive outcome. The food was good and above expectations.

I don't tend to write reviews however I have taken the time on this occasion as I do believe this is a great place however we were lucky to have very attentive service (problems were overcome very quickly - well done Johnny - you made our meal a success!).

Why not 5 stars - I certainly would for the service from Johnny but we did have to wait slightly too long when served by somebody else. (Needless to say Johnny managed to rectify.)

After a long walk in the beautiful Royal Botanic Garden, we thought it would be nice to have afternoon tea at the Gateway Restaurant. We arrived around 3PM, got immediately seated, ordered and got our hot drinks quickly. Then, we had to wait for a rather long time. But before we could complain, the personal apologized and we were offered another hot drink, for free! And after maybe twenty minutes more, we were enjoying our cucumber sandwiches, a delicious scone and various small cakes. The atmosphere was quite homely - we particularly appreciated the solid looking wooden tables (each of them made of another wood) - and the service smiling and very nice (we even got a discount in the end) !

I used to really love The gateway for a big weekend breakfast. However they have made some changes. It is not smaller, not as well presented and you don't get as much toast. The layout of the restaurant has also changed.
Today I tried an afternoon tea. Overpriced and sandwiches were not fresh! And they were all vegetarian. Quite disappointing.

Not what it used to be. Plenty of other places to try in Edinburgh.
