“Beautiful Hotel - Great Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2012

We were visiting Scotland to see friends and chose this hotel for an added bit of luxury.

This is a beautiful hotel, very grand building and reception area. The staff were very polite and helpful.

Our room was lovely, elegant design, comfortable bed, great ammenities, lots of special touches and a superb shower!

The hotel was just changing over to a 'Waldorf Astoria' hotel - we noticed the new name had been revealed on the morning we left.

The staff were very helpful too and advised us on various routes / sightseeing tips as well as providing a map for us to take away.

The location is perfect, it is situated at the bottom of Princess Street, in walking distance of all sightseeing places such as the castle and gardens.

This hotel is perfect if you are looking for a bit of luxury for your stay - I'd recommend it to couples and groups of friends. We would stay at the hotel again on our next visit.

Quality hotel in an excellnt location for all you need to do in Edinbrough. We have just arrived back from a gerat weekend break ,staying in the caledonion Waldorf Hotel. Look no furher as this hotel has all you will need for a great stay in this wonderful city. The refurbishment work is still ongoing with the pool and spa,and when complete will only enhance an already comfortable hotel break. The refurbed room we stayed in 179, had a poor view of the rear but was realy comfortable and very well equiped and did the job of a good nights sleep after a very hectic day. We had breakfast each morning, and for 15 pounds per head is well worh this slightly high premium with an excellent selection that will fit most peoples needs. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and we will stay again when we visit edinbrough.

Room Tip: poor outlook at the rear but quiet for goodnights sleep.

Stayed for three nights two of which were booked on business with the final a separate personal booking. The refresh has been tastefully done. Excellent quality bed and linen. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

The nespresso machine in the room was a very nice touch and the breakfast was nice.

Only negative comment was the lousy beer, but I guess they don't serve much Boddingtons north of the border!

We had a marvelous time in this hotel and in Edinburgh ! The location is top of the top, in the middle of everything ! It was great, apart of final renovation in the hotel. Rooms with view to the castle are recommended ! The Caledonian Hilton now mouved to The Caledonian , A Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The staff is very nice, they tried to make the situation better. The constructions in town for the Tram are very loud and dusty too, it should be better after 2014 !

Room Tip: castle view !

Went on business, but will take my wife for a short break one of these days. Beautiful stone-built hotel, well-situated just off the main drag (Princes Street, not the Royal Mile); 25 mins by bus from the airport, ideal for the shops, National Gallery and the Castle inter alia. Large airy room, but cosy/good temperature control, bedlinen added a touch of luxury. Breakfast self-service and not necessarily 'a point', but everything you could want and plenty of it. Main restaurant expensive, but for those who value fine dining, an excellent facility. Edinburgh is sometimes called the 'Athens of the North' - IMHO the only thing Athens has over it is weather. The city is a jewel: low-rise, ethnic architecture, clean and fresh, good public transport, tons of history and culture. If you are coming from the south of Britain, flying is best value: despite dour but unavoidable security procedures, it is much faster than the train, cheaper and less tiring than driving, and an utter relief not go through Immigration.

Room Tip: The view of the castle is from the east side is spectacular

Five of us stayed at this hotel for one night and it lived up to its star rating. The staff were friendly and attentive. The rooms were large, sumptuous, quiet, with comfortable beds. Buffet breakfast that catered to everybody's needs. Although the hotel was undergoing some refurbishment with the pool and spa out of action, courtesy taxis took you back and for to the nearby 5 star Scotsman Hotel where you could take advantage of their facilities. The refurbishment activities certainly did not affect the quality of our stay. If I was coming back to Edinburgh and wanted to stay in hotel with a bit of grandeur, style and comfort then this is where I would choose to stay.

Out and about today we decided to drop in to the Caley Hotel (now a Waldorf Hotel) and check out the new lounge area. What a delightful experience considering it used to be a part of the Caledonian Station. We bagged a comfortable seat and ordered a couple of drinks. The snack menu would have been our preference but this wasn't served until after 5:00 p.m. Instead we opted for a "Waldorf" salad at around £11. What a disappointment - the size of the salad would only have passed for a starter size anywhere else - a nibble would be the best way to describe it. Our total bill for a large glass of white wine, apple juice and 2 "Waldorf" salads over £35.00. What a rip-off!! We don't think we will make the same mistake again!! Tip for the Waldorf - take a walk along Princes Street to the Balmoral Hotel (another first class establishment) and have a look at their menus in the lounge.

The refurbishment of the Caley is worth a visit, but don't repeat the mistake that we made by sampling their lounge menu. Someone should tell them there is a recession on in this country and it is almost criminal to charge the prices that they are asking!!

Is £3.75 for a cup of coffee reasonable in this economic climate?

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
