We're in process of bringing to this hotel over the course of a few days a very large group of friends who have traveled together extensively for nearly a decade and a half. We're well traveled and have experienced many levels of service from the Serengeti in Africa to Ashford Castle in Ireland. Not all have compelled me to write a review. This one has. The Waldorf Astoria/Caledonian has not only the best location in town, but the friendliness, the deference to those who require it and the ability to anticipate our needs. It's only been a few days so far, but our experience here been remarkable. From the top down, it has already been a success. Bravo and congratulations to the hotel management. The individuals made a difference: Joanis (in Brasserie management), was both engaging and professional, and helped with our dinner parties - he made a huge impact on our experience here. Laura, Chris and Natalie in events and guest relations, respectively, were extraordinary and always cheerful and ready to help. Equally impressive: the front desk and concierges, housekeeping and fabulous wait staff, who are warm, helpful and again, completely professional. No request was too large or too small to garner complete attention. They went over and above what was expected. Whether you're here on your own or bringing a group, if you want a lovely, top-flight hotel with impeccable service and wonderful food - (first rate; an amazing chef who is an artful and creative talent as well as a lovely individual) then this is the place for you. We'll be here again, without a doubt.

Room Tip: Get a deluxe view room, at very least. It's well worth it.

Excellent hotel, perfect views of the castle (room 412), awesome breakfast (why no waffles though?). When booking directly the booking team were kind enough to offer the 'Visa package' (see below) - as a result, we got an upgrade to a Castle view room.

Room Tip: Quote 'Visa' offer - you should get a free upgrade, free Wi-Fi and free breakfast

A lovely, modern hotel right under the castle at one end of the all important parts of Edinburgh. We had booked a Junior suite but it was shoved up in the eaves on the top floor, a long and cramped corridor of a room. My husband is a very tall man and he was uncomfortable. They kindly moved us to another lovely room that didn't have a castle view but much better for space. The bar was well stocked and the Peacock Alley a nice place to sit after a busy day. The service in the Brasserie and menu selection was superb. Breakfast should have been enjoyable but we had a very sullen and miserable waitress who didn't seem to care at all. It took 15 minutes for her to ask us if would like tea or coffee and there were only 4 other couples in the place. After another 15 minutes and the drinks had still not arrived I went to fetch the head waiter who tried taking our order but they didn't have half the items on the menu. We gave up and had the breakfasts out instead. No apologies, no compensation, nothing. I must admit I expected better from such a hotel and it did cast a shadow on our stay.

My daughter's birthday wish to visit Edinburgh Castle and stay at The Caledonian. I used some of my HHonors points to stay there and we got a very nice room. The service and hospitality was fantastic. I travel a lot and can't recall better service. We will be back.

Stayed here as a special birthday treat for my other half. We were not disappointed. I sometimes worry about going to lush places like this and feeling out of place, but I didn't feel that here I'm glad to say!

We received a warm and friendly welcome and we were very pleased with our room. We had paid an advance rate which was pretty good value for the room we received. We were overall happy with the facilities within the room- the shower was large and had a "monsoon" style head (but you could set the shower to the standard head any time you wanted) which was fantastic!

The room was spacious and clean and had everything we needed, including a room safe, mini bar and tea/coffee facilities. Additional items included bath robes and slippers and plenty of toiletries which we used some of.

The only vaguely annoying thing was that the tv picture wasn't 100% and so the images were a bit grainy. However, this did not bother us too much as we only used the tv for a short time.

We had a drink in the bar downstairs in the evening and it was very pleasant with table service and complimentary nibbles (red and green olives and wasabi peas I think).Very nice surroundings and very nice cocktails, and again, although we were probably the youngest couple there we did not feel unwelcome or out of place.

We were very impressed with the hotel itself, as the hallways and staircases are very grand and well kept. We enjoyed just being there and preferred to take the stairs rather than the lift to our room so we could marvel at the surroundings of this very luxurious hotel.

Would definitely love to stay here again or perhaps in one of the other Waldorf hotels if we are able to treat ourselves again for a special occasion!

First time in a Waldorf, and I can't really tell what was better/higher-end than in a good Hilton or in a typical Conrad. Especially when you are told about all the things not pre-included for HH status members (e.g. no breakfast, no wifi), you expect to find some serious awesomeness to justify these differentiated (downward) treatment.

Positives:
+ location - short walk to the castle
+ room size - large, spacious bathroom as well
+ generally attentive reception staff (though concierge people seem to make a conscious effort to avoid smiling).

Negatives (might not be descriptive of the hotel, but unfortunately part of my experience):
- poor quality beds. This was shocking as one of the things I've always loved in Hilton / Conrads /Double Tree hotels was the beds. This one was too soft and not even (yes, it had a curvature). It's not the personalized bed-sheets that make a comfortable sleep, but the build/quality of the bed and mattress
- walls of the room with scratches/markings - urgent painting needed (room 135).
- badly managed breakfast: shortage of bread!!! (Friday, May 2nd - in case someone from management doesn't believe and wants to check). Staff overwhelmed and showing this clearly - stressed, rushed.
- list of TV channels listed in the TV menu not in line with what was really available on TV (missing CNN, despite being listed).

Could not have asked for a better location. Very happy with our stay. The hotel held our bags for us the whole day after checkout, as we were catching the night train back to London. The door men were very lovely.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
