“Iconic Hotel in Edinburgh”
Reviewed 19 July 2014 via mobile

Just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay at this historic hotel in Edinburgh. Although not right in the heart in the Old Town or New Town, it was less than a 5 minute walk to major attractions.

As a Diamond Member, we were upgraded to a castle view room which was spectacular. The room was well appointed and was large for a European historic hotel. As our flight from Canada arrived at 7am, we were also given early check-in which gave us an opportunity to relax before we started exploring the city that day. Daily continental breakfast was provided which was wonderful. 3 out of 4 days there was freshly squeezed orange juice which was very good. We also experienced afternoon tea as well and enjoyed the experience.

The housekeeping was a little inconsistent, small details as locations of rugs and what amenities would be replenished were some of the issues we noted.

Although we were on the 2nd floor, the room itself was quiet, no street noise as the curtains kept the noise out. The curtains also kept the room dark which was wonderful.

The front desk staff, concierge and the restaurant staff were all very helpful.

Overall a great experience, would definitely stay here again and recommend friends and family to stay here as well.

Stayed for 3 nights recently and had a fantastic time. The hotel was superb and our room had a magnificent view of Edinburgh castle. The food in the Pompadour restaurant was fabulous and the service was even better. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. If you are reading this posting, you should definitely stay at this hotel. You won't regret it!!!

This was our first trip to Edinburgh and I chose the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian as it was in the perfect location for everything we wanted to do on our stay. We enjoyed a very relaxing stay in a lovely comfortable room which was decorated to a high standard and spotlessly clean. The hotel staff were always courteous and helpful and we found the hotel facilities good. We spent a leisurely couple of hours relaxing around the pool, sauna and jacuzzi. Peacock Alley was an elegant and charming place to sit and enjoy a drink in the evening. Breakfast in the restaurant was popular and after waiting a short while to be seated we found it was well worth the wait. We would love to return to this hotel for a longer stay next time we visit Edinburgh.

It is an older hotel but is located in the great location, right next to the Edinburgh castle. From airport, you can take new Edinburgh tram to "West End" station and the hotel is about 2 blocks from there. The rooms are a bit tired but are clean and very comfortable with high end amenities. The hotel has great restaurants and bars. Continental breakfast is provided free of charge to Hilton gold members.

The best thing about the hotel is the service. Before we departed the states, Natalie from concierge emailed me if she could help with anything. She helped us with directions using tram, restaurant reservations, and so on. She welcomed us with a complimentary (small) bottle of wine, fruit tray, water (still and sparkling) and a hand-written welcome note.

During the stay, handle of the bathroom flush broke. The staff tried to take care of it right away but it was beyond their skills and they had to relocate us to next door. They sent me a bottle of wine right away to compensate for my inconvenience.

I will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view of the castle

We stayed for 3 days at this beautifull hotel, (11.7.14 to 13.7.14). We were in room 172 on the 1st floor. Although the view from the window was just of the car park, the comfort of the room more than compensated for that. Everything you could possibly need to make your stay, homely and comfortable, was at your disposal.Breakfast / meal times in the restaurant was very, very nice. The food, and the choices, were truly remarkable, you could not fault any of it. All of the staff there were always there to fulfill any request you had. We had more contact with Carlos (from Mexico) Tomas (from Czechoslovakia) and Vasilias (from Corfu) who made our stay "special", although you could not fault any other member of staff. We would definatley return to this hotel. It adds to the whole package that Edingburgh has to offer. You have to try the afternnon tea, in Peacock Alley, which will give you time to sit back, relax in wonderfull surroundings, and while away an hour or so, listening to the harp / piano, playing in the background.

Room Tip: We think you would find it very hard to find a "bad" room at this hotel.

Paid an outrageous amount of money for what can only be described as a closet. Worse than Paris and I'm surprised at the Scots selling a room like this at that price to unsuspecting tourists. Edinburgh marathon was on so the rip off culture was in full swing. Breakfast buffet was good but put off by the room/wardrobe. I'll not be back.

Dear CluckerJones,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review following your recent stay with us. It is with deep regret that you feel ‘ripped off’, this is certainly not a common view as you can tell by our other reviews on the page. As mentioned, the demand for rooms is particularly high during peak times, including the Edinburgh marathon, and I would be disappointed if this experience deterred you from returning again in the future. Moreover, should you indeed choose to reconsider, please contact me directly on chris.logan@waldorfastoria.com.

The Waldorf is beautiful and classy. Best nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel. The bed was very firm and perfect after a long days tour through the city. The furniture is sophisticated and the attention to detail in the room was impeccable. Great location. Would definitely stay here again.

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality.
