A Georgian Building in the New Town.

The Howard is not the normal tourist hotel - it has class.

We spent a comfortable stay in tasteful surroundings with professional service.

Not cheap, however, and for this reason I shall make the point that a dirty breakfast tray that had been in the corridor on our arrival was still there next day.

Room Tip: avoid the basement as its windows look onto a blank wall

Although this hotel is one of the more expensive hotels in Edinburgh, it is worth it for the service, location, food and safe valet parking. I was here over St Andrews weekend with my fiance for a wedding and stayed three nights.

The room was very spacious, nice high ceiling, however it was still toasty warm which you need in Edinburgh. The bed was also huge, made our double at home feel like a single when we got back. The bathroom again big but still nice and warm and there were no problems with the shower. We were facing the back of the building and it was nice and quiet, plus I could see the car park from there.

We had breakfast downstairs for two mornings and ordered breakfast in bed for the day after we went to the wedding, which was needed. I really enjoy Scottish breakfasts and they were delicious would recommend.

The staff here are really helpful, recommending a restaurant and booking it for us as well as bringing us tea when requested, even late at night. I also appreciate the valet parking, my car may not have been the most expensive in the private car park but at least I didn't have to worry about it.

I will defiantly come again when I have a long weekend in Edinburgh.

From the moment we arrived on a wet and windy Edinburgh evening and were met by a member of staff holding an umbrella and assisting us with our luggage, there was automatically a welcoming feeling to this hotel. Indeed, there was no rush to even 'book-in' when we unloaded our luggage. We were instantly invited to sit in the comfy surroundings of the lounge and enjoy complimentary tea and coffee whilst our luggage was taken to our allocated room. I could recount many similar instances during our 3 night stay at this hotel, but suffice to say that the exemplary service continued throughout.

An advantage of this hotel is also that it has dedicated car parking facilities. The car park is situated at the rear of the hotel and is reached by driving into Cumberland Street (from the direction of Drummond Place) and taking the first left turn into the lane and following it to the end where the rear entrance of the hotel is on your left.

We took breakfast in the dining room each morning and again enjoyed the experience, it making a pleasant change to be waited upon as opposed to the normal 'self-service' buffet style arrangements. We also ate in the dining room (The Atholl) on one evening and although quiet, the meal was of a very good standard.

We stayed in The Abercrombie Room which I believe was one of the Junior suites. Spacious but warm and welcoming describes the accommodation, together with a lovely large bathroom complete with both tub and shower. This room is situated at the front of the hotel but I would have to say that we did not personally experience any negatives as regards noise etc. (Please note that we were on a mid-week break).

We are regular visitors to Edinburgh and would have no hesitation in staying at The Howard.

We stayed at The Howard on the 1st leg of our honeymoon and have to say it was a fantastic experience.

The hotel is superb with lots of space, great rooms and has a relaxed atmosphere all helped by being in a fantastic location at the heart of Edinburgh. The friendly, helpful service, particularly with the team of butlers was second to none - we opted for breakfast in the room on a number of occasions and it made us feel very special!

Old-world, 5-start luxury and charm without being stuffy and formal. Excellent all round!

What a lovely, relaxing, small hotel to stay in!
When you've stayed in many large modern hotels , this was a welcome change.
The free upgrade, which we received, was a bonus.
Old world charm of hotel was a great experience.

This hotel is superb. It combines all of the great things about staying in a boutique hotel into one brilliant package.
The rooms are luxurious, yet at the same time welcoming. The butler service is great.
The staff manage to be unobtrusive yet always there when you need them. Tea or coffee is graciously and promptly delivered when requested.
The entire tel is spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Having breakfast delivered to my room was to me, the icing on the cake.
Go on, spoil yourself!

This was our fourth stay at The Howard and unfortunately it is in need of a refurbishment. We stayed in the 'Frederic' room for two nights in january for our wedding anniversary. The cost was £165 and £215 per night.
On the first evening I went to see the receptionist and told her we were very disappointed with our room and she said "sorry, I will pass your comments on to the manager". I expected some sort of acknowlegement next day but none was forthcoming. My main concerns were very badly stained cusion covers on the bed - which were later removed and the disgusting state of the two armchairs - very badly worn and dirty! - Not 5 star I can assure you.
On checking out I said how disappointed we had been and left them a list of what we felt let them down.
I have also emailed all the following to them and asked the manager to comment but alas he has failed to do so.
The following are what needs to be put right: The 2 armchairs; headboard is smaller than the width of the bed; quilt too small for the bed; supposed to be a king size, but is two beds pushed together with the dreaded gap in the middle; hem of bathroom curtains dirty; lampshade badly stained; a new fan had been fitted in the bathroom but no-one had cleaned up afterwards; black down the side of the outside of the shower due to a leaking shower tray.
Due to my complaints we received a price reduction. However, this was not why we stayed here, it would have been much better to receive what we had wanted.
