Love the old buildings, and some great places to eat, but most of the other places are selling the same as the next shop and most of that is cheap rubbish.

“Spectacular location”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

I had read about Old Town, but never really got the full sense of the place until climbing up Castle Rock and looking down the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is actually a volcanic ridge extending from the castle at the west end to Holyrood Palace at the east end. Plan to spend all day as there are so many picturesque nooks and crannies (called closes and winds) that are fun to explore, not to mention the castle which will take a couple of hours itself.

Also, don't forget to go down the hill (at the castle end) to areas like Grassmarket - a great place to shop and get some lunch. Just around the corner from Grassmarket is Greyfriars Bobby and the National Museum, both great sights in themselves. Then you can walk back up George IV Bridge to continue down the Royal Mile.

“Around the castle”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

Reminded us a bit of Budapest the old part on the hills growing from the foot of the castle. Narrow cobbled streets some tourist shops particularly cashmere ones. Leads down to the Palace down the Royal mile. Church where Zara Philips was married.all very interesting.
