“Scottish shopping”
Reviewed 13 December 2013

Was looking for traditional gifts, so many shops offering a variety of gifts, lots of cashmere on offer but also some small gifts at competitive prices.

“history where ever you looked”
Reviewed 12 December 2013

A really good place to walk down.

Steeped in history with many shops (many selling the same tourist tat) but some that were interesting.

Buildings were fascinating with some great architecture. I liked the fact all shops and cafe's had used existing buildings rather than build modern monstrosities.

Plenty to see and do along here and quite a few of the major attractions are on the mile, most of the spook tours leave from here and of course at each end you have the palace and castle.

Plenty of cafes to refresh you after a good walk up and down

“Scratch the surface a bit”
Reviewed 12 December 2013

On the surface it is a bit tacky. My understanding is that the awful sell-tartan-knickers-to-tourists shops are coming under pressure to radically clean up their act. This can only be good for the area. Don't forget this is old, old Edinburgh and, by the cringe, there is a lot of history here. From the castle to the palace it is just steeped in stories, noble deeds and blood. Go down the closes off the Mile. Nose about a bit. The Museum of Childhood is a gem. There are lots of great shops and restaurants, just be a little careful and use a bit of common. You wouldn't be diving into the first restaurant you came to on the Champs Élysées so don't do it here! Get a half way good guide book. Scotland the Best?
It gets very busy during the festival with lotes of street action. Please, if you watch an artiste, put some dosh in the hat.

“A Wide Variety of Shops”
Reviewed 12 December 2013

I was quite disappointed by the shops in the Royal Mile as a lot have become too touristy for such a historic street. A lot of the cashmere shops had hidden sales such as selling Buy One Get One Half Price and 50% off the Ticket Price. The whisky shops are well worth a visit if only to gasp at the number of whiskies that are available. If you get the chance go down the many passageways to see Edinburgh as it used to be, especially Lady Stair's Close. If you are walking from Holyrood to the Castle allow more than a couple of hours.
