“Ideal base for a visit to Scotland's capital city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2014 via mobile

A high quality hotel in the heart of Edinburgh city centre, with views of the castle from the restaurant and front facing rooms. There is ample parking provision in the adjacent multi storey car park, but remember to pay along with your accommodation charge rather than at the ticket machine so as to benefit from a residents discount.

There are impressive spa and leisure facilities as well as fine dining available to residents, which all go towards making a most enjoyable stay in one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities.

I hadn't been at the Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh in about 12 years, so I was surprised by the overhaul.
The hotel has opted for 'it can be anywhere' slickness & newness & given up the deep green leather & tartans that made it unique & identified it with Scotland. The only nod to the fact it is in Edinburgh are some large photos & some designer-like tartan-inspired touches on the rugs & some pillows. (And the great view of Edinburgh Castle if you are lucky!)
Still, the hotel is lovely, if not traditional or particularly Scottish. The location is terrific.
The rooms are very W-like. They're put together for efficiency.
The hall lights go on as you approach. It can be a bit disconcerting to stare down a dark hall at first, but you get used to it.
The lobby is tall & very modern. It has a nice fireplace.
The beds are high & comfy. I opted to work from the bed rather than the desk!
The set-up is odd, however, as the lights that control the bathroom are shoulder level in the mirrored wall next to the bed, not anywhere where you'd expect them to be.
The elevators are quick.
The staff is absolutely lovely, helpful & accommodating.
The team in the bar on the 2nd floor are great. No worries eating there alone. They're so helpful & provide good recommendations.
The club serves a great brekkie. I didn't get to have evening drinks, but the choices looked fine.

The list:
Shower pressure: Very tood. Grohe fixtures.
Front desk: Above average.
Bed: Above average.
Sheets/Bedding: Average.
Towels: The face towels are terrific and plush. The big towels aren't quite bathsheets and could be more bigger & plusher.
Phone service/attendants: Above average.
Room size: Average to above average.
Room service: Affordable with a lot of choices.
Bathroom amenities: You'd think with its link to the One Spa this hotel would have better bathroom amenities, but no. They have the same sub-standard stuff that all Sheratons have. It dries your skin out, so I never use it.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the castle!

Check in smoothly, up to our fabulous room in the Club Level with Castle View, opening the door to the most stunning view of Edinburgh Castle, the room was immaculately clean with lots of gadgets, loved the mood lighting, surround sound throughout the room (watched telly in the bath). The Club Floor is well worth the upgrade. The club lounge is open all day with delicious cookies and shortbread, teas and coffees and soft drinks in a relaxing atmosphere. Then between 5.30 and 7.30 a delicious service of hot and cold canapes on a grand scale is served and constantly replenished, along with beers wines and spirits on tap so to speak. Friendly attentive and simply delightful staff there to make your stay so perfect. The food was delicious, we didn't need to eat out as the canapes and drinks was so grand we had were full up and ready for a night out in Edinburgh. The spa, well what can I say, i've been to many a spa, but this one is the creme de la creme. With the rooftop hydro pool which has in and outdoor section (bliss !!) to the magnificent thermal suite, which has 11 heat or wet rooms, from aroma steam room to 2 different saunas, the rainshowers are wonderful and the heated beds, you could just live here literally !!! Wonderful Wonderful !!! Thank you so much to all the staff for making our stay for my husbands birthday so very special, we are already shopping for deals for my Birthday in November, can't wait to return. PS the continental breakfast with hot option in the Club lounge was a feast fit for a king, delicious

Room Tip: Go for a castle view club room if you can, its worth it

A friend and I stayed over the weekend whilst visiting family in Edinburgh. The room was very well equipped and well designed especially the bathroom with frosted glass doors making the room appear spacious. The room was very clean and beds were very comfortable. The staff were friendly and accomodating, nothing seemed too much trouble.
We used the spa and had a very relaxing morning. The pool was great too.The cleopatra baths were out of use and it would be good to have an estimated time for when the essential works will be completed. Other than that it was a great place to stay and i would recommend it.
Location was perfect, just a 10minute walk from main Princes Stree shops, 5mins from Castle and Royal Mile etc.
A great weekend stay. Thanks

We had a brilliant weekend. Cannot recommend this place enough. To start excellent location - we walked everywhere that we wanted to see from here. The welcome and service was perfect, with some brilliant tips of things to do.

The rooms are beautifully decorated and incredibly comfortable. I genuinely loved the bed and wish it were mine (not something I say lightly). We had said we would get up early and get out exploring but it was just such a comfortable bed that moving was an effort. You get all the standard things. However the bits that we really loved were the lights and bathroom layout, it is unnecessary to have mood lighting for a bath but very enjoyable. Finally there is the swimming pool in the spa complex that is really lovely. Brilliant weekend, cannot wait to come back.

The rooms are obviously expensive, but if you don't mind when you come and shop around you can get a deal that is incredible value. We did have breakfast here as that was rather expensive and we just wanted to get out and see the city.

Dear Guest
Thak you for this superb five star review and for recommending us to others. I am truly delighted that you had such a good time here in Edinburgh and enjoyed your stay with us. I agree that the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper beds that are in ALL Sheraton bedrooms are super comfortable! However I am glad that you managed to get up and explore this amazing city and then made the time to relax at One Spa.
Thank you once again, your kind words are very much appreciated, and we look forward to welcoming you back.
Best regards

We stayed here last February. Originally we'd won a two night package via the Foodie magazine but as we were told only three days before the weekend we couldn't get the time off for the trip. We were thrilled to be given access to the equivalent event in Battersea Park AND to be given the hotel stay plus the meal.

It was a year ago, so I can't say too much about the food. It was very good, and the hotel is certainly up to the Starwood standards (I'm an SPG person). The room was comfy and had an exceptionally funky bathroom with mood lighting - that's a step up from Frankfurt and Amsterdam airports.

Location, as long as you don't mind a walk uphill (it is Edinburgh after all!) is very convenient if you're sightseeing. Also very handy for the airport bus.

My wife and I decided to add Edinburgh onto a business trip to London & Paris, mainly to escape a nasty storm that was headed to the East Coast of the US. On arrival in Edinburgh, we took the airport bus #100 to the West End stop. From there, the hotel is 3 blocks. Easy and inexpensive way to get to and from the hotel.

Based on other reviewers' comments, we booked a club level room with spa access. Thank you, all of you who recommended that. The extra cost is well worth it, as the rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the spa is especially nice, with a full thermal suite of steam, sauna and a not-to-be-missed indoor/outdoor pool with multiple spa jets. (The key is to start at one end and work your way all the way around through all of the jets, so that you cover all the body parts.)

Our only mistake was in splurging for an extra 20 pounds per night for a castle view room. Those rooms front onto the plaza, where there is a taxi rank. Our arrival was on the day of the England-Scotland rugby match, and we were warned that the taxi area would likely be loud and boisterous with revelers (which it was). We downgraded back to the standard club room, but since the room and upgrade were prepaid, it was a waste of 60 pounds for an upgrade we didn't use.

The staff in the club lounge, Vanessa and Joan, were well trained and very attentive. The selection of food and beverage was quite nice, and quality was high.

All in all, I'd return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Definitely go for the club floor and spa access. If you are bothered by a bit of noise (or maybe mo...
